Is it really that wrong if someone calls themselves "Mexican-American" or "Chinese-American" or anything else?

It is a question of if there was a war between the two countries, whose side would you be on?

But no, there is nothing 'wrong' with being 'something-American'. The distinction is helpful if you are sharing a heritage with others. However, we hope Americans are American first.

And no, it doesn't make you illegal. I guess I'm German-American, but that sounds weird to me even though I know German and I certainly think of that as my family heritage.

I'm American, and my family came from Germany, is how I look at it.

I was recently in a production of a play called "Polish Joke" in which the main character (first generation American- parents were from Poland) learns that the so-called Polish gloom is really just the human condition. When he finally ends up in Poland against his will, a lady tells him he does not love Poland because he is not willing to defend it. I could call myself Irish-American even though I was born in Wisconsin and I have strong family ties in Ireland..... but if worse came to worse and given the choice I would defend the U.S. before I would defend Ireland. You can love two countries at once but if those countries are ever pitted against one another, the one you choose to defend is the one you TRULY love.

there are so many people that have mixed families, there is nothing wrong with that at all. :-)

I see all this stupid questions about legality of a person because that person is dark skinned almost sure is an illegal because Bush said so, there are so many white persons in Mexico and central america and I dont think you can ever tell the difference between legal and illegal just by looking at that person, what if that person is white? then is legal? that so f*cking stupid!!

These terms are generally used by a person to identify themselves by their ethnic group. It is not a matter of loving two countries. Such as African American. This is a term that was created by someone. The use of this term has been controversial because many do not associate themselves with Africa, and very few have even know anything about Africa! Personally, I refer to myself as Black.

Dual loyalty is wrong, unless you have both citizenships. Having love for your homeland is completely different than having a foreign allegiance. That said most people who say they are another nationality and American, are just American. They have usually never even been to any other country, hold no citizenship there, and they were born here. That does not make you a Chinese-American, or a Russian-American, etc. It just makes you an American. If you were to go to your ancestors homeland, they are not going to see you as one of their own, they see you as an American. Why not just live with it, you or your family came here to have a better life, why do you stay in the past you were so desperate to flee?

and second the great thing about this country is having the right and ability to call myself whatever it is i please!!!!!!! i will not call myself by a label somebody else or our government imposes on me...... i am both a Mexican-American and a Chicano...... and i very much enjoy living on this threshold of two countries..... two cultures!!!!!!

My opinion: Yes, it's wrong. You are either an American, or you are some other nationality. You can be proud of your heritage, but you only have ONE nationality.

Before anyone jumps my case, I am an American. If I wanted to get technical, then I guess that I am an American of German/Scottish/Native American/Welsh descent. I guess that you could say that I'm a German-Scottish-Native American-Welsh-American, but that sounds rather stupid.

If you are a legal American citizen,it doesn't matter .As long as you have loyalty to America.My ancestors were German,and came to this country in 1702.I feel no allegiance to or kinship to Germany.I do love the nation I was born in and that's the USA.( I do not dislike Germany either,but I am a native born American first )I would only fight and defend the USA.

You see these are the problems that we have in our country the United States of America and we as Americans have to change them, because what it do is to divide us into groups and I think these is one of the reasons why we all have these problems. There is only one to blame and that is the Government of the USA. The government like to divided its citizens in groups, Hispanics, Whites, Blacks, Native Americans, Asians, non whites, etc. etc. I mean what's the reason for this, does this help in any way the American people, I don't think so because when you divide you weaken and is bad. When ever we as Americans start seeing that what the government is doing is diving and not uniting then the biggest problems in our society will disappears and we will become all Americans with out first names. We are all Americans with out first names we don't need them... What do you think??

I think the reason so many of us get upset is because of what the illegals did on May 1st. They deliberately put our flag upside down with theirs on top of it. If you agree with something like that, you have no business here in the United States. I am sick of illegal trespassing criminals trying to push their third world culture on us. I am sick and tired of them disrespecting Americans and biting the hand that feeds them. There is really only room for one flag....

and you aren't called Chinese-American(or any other type of American) because you <3 America. It's because you are Chinese and you live in the States, or visa-versa
