I moves to UK and although yes my English is not very good I has worked very hard, I hav not ever claimed a benefit ftom UK. I came here to work and i work very hard for my own living
i do not expect to be support by anyone else! |

No. Just because you cannot make it on your own, the taxpayers of a country should not have to support you. Many immigrants through Ellis Island came with nothing and worked hard to assimilate and become successful citizens. |

There are migrants who don't know the language of the country they're migrating to? It's a bit unconscionable to go to someplace where in you have less opportunity to connect, and you can't even communicate. |

Today's society in the US has become, for the most part, bilingual. However, I feel if your going to work in the United States you do need to learn to speak atleast basic English. English is the countries language and just as if we went to another country we have to learn the language or we don't understand. That country doesn't change their language, I would just have to learn how to speak it. |

i m immigrant working very hard 7 days a week and paying tax like you i am not getting any benefit at all. |

I dont mind people coming to UK to work hard and pay taxes.
What i cant stand is people mainly in the Pakistani and Indian community who have been in the country 30 years and still dont speak english. These people also tend to be on benefits long term by choice! |

I thought there has been a suggestion that if they cannot speak English they won't get benefits any more? |

The problem is with lobbyists and Washington in general.
A bilingual country is a divided country. All people entering this country (except the Spanish - or so it seems) have taken the time to learn English.
Why don't we declare that the official language of this country is English (or "American" if you prefer) and get on with uniting all groups?

America is different from other countries in our policies on immigrants. But, I do feel that if people want to make this their permanent home, there should be incentive to learn the language.... And their really doesn't seem to be. |

No, it is not. |

I cannot understand this concept at all.In the USA there are plenty of non-Engish speakers who have jobs. |

The only immigrants who receive a benefit are asylum seekers because they are not allowed to work until their case in Home Office is decided! Most of them have an education for doctors, engineers etc.
What about Britons who are stupid enough not to study, using drugs, giving birth at the age of 16 and being single mums for the rest of their lives, living in a miserable and suicidal council house in the roughest areas of the cities etc. Do you want me to continue with the examples? And don't even get me started on what's the public opinion about the British nation in general! |

Yep dude, thats doesnt seem to be right. It definately doesnt encourige them to assimilate and learn language. Well UK is liberal. Heh. |

cmeand3 - what is an ''American''? You obviously know nothing about your own country's history. All Americans are immigrants - or are you ALL miraculously descended from the native American tribes? Shame that so many self proclaimed patriots know sweet f*** all about the lands they claim to be so proud of.
We're all descended from the cradle of humanity anyway, for Christ's sake. THE SAME PLACE.
If I'm wrong - put up a decent argument to that. None of you will be able to, because there isn't one. The worst you can do is call me a load of names, which is exactly what you will do, becuse you can't argue with logical FACTS. |

are you talking about immigration or asylum? These are two entirely different subjects. We are duty bound by eu regulations to accept a certain number of asylum seekers every year whether or not they speak English. As far as immigration is concerned, the government has recognised that immigrants are only a benefit to our economy if they can speak English and bring with them a certain skill that we need. They are bringing in new tests but it may take a while until the home office starts being more efficient. |

If they do not get benefits and work illegally e.g. do not pay taxes, then they're in a catch 22 situation.
Which would you prefer, considering they are here already?
Also, have you not seen the medical workforce in the UK? If it wasn't for migrants I'd dare say we'd be short a a lot of very skilled dentists, doctors, nurses and surgeons who will, one day, probably save the life of someone you hold dear to yourself.
Yes, that same person claiming benefits may have a child here, in Britain, who grows into a person who discovers a cure for Cancer or a new surgucal technique, so do n't be so judgemental. |

Who says they get benefits? They don't get benefits unless they have paid a certain amount of national insurance contributions. I've never met a single polish person on the dole. Ok some have council housing but you can't apply for that until you have worked here for a year... |

Why do you think they come here to begin with? They want a handout. Let a few of them starve and they'll stay in their rathole country. |

no they should`nt be given benefits, when we moved back from south africa we are british nationallity, my parents could`nt get a penny off the system whithout having to pay it all back so whether they can speak english or not they should`nt be given a penny for the first 6 month of them being in the counrty |

If they are legal immigrants what's the problem? At one time someone from everyone's family was an immigrant. |

illegal immigrants need to be deported back home. now if they do it right and go thru all the legal system, then yes. Its like giving a gold star to a kid that did something right. you don't give a star to a kid that did something wrong.....wait let me take the back, in today's standard, we're not allowed to give gold stars to kids that excel anymore cuz it will ruin the self esteem of the bad kid. oh pathic this PC is sending a country and down spiral.
when an illegal immigrant gets more rights than a natural born citizen...then something is very very wrong. |

Anyone staying in the UK should be entitled to NO BENEFITS until they have paid into the system. The benefits system should be operated like a bank account, if you have not paid in, you get sod all out. That would chase the vast majority of scroungers that arrive on our shores every week back to their own country where they belong. |

i think its fair to ask immigrants that have come here to know english. if they have migrated here to work, how on earth do they get on benefits?
Asylum seeks on the other hand, they do not have to, but they do get the opportunity to if they so wish.
My husband came here as an asylum seeker, and before anyone makes rude comments, he speaks great english and doesnt claim benefits, and never has apart from when he first arrived.
Those that have come here because of persicution, givethem a break, they have hard a hard enough life ( probably alot tougher than you or i ), but those that migrate here either for work or through getting married, i think its acceptable that they should learn english, why should they come here then claim our benefits, they should work like the rest of us |

No its not bloody right they should learn our laungauge and help by getting jobs and paying there taxes like the majority.
