Is legalizing immigration the answer? Will making it legal bring peace?

If we start legalizing immigration we are going to have another depression. What employer is going to pay an american the wages they are if they can get someone from another country to to the same job for much less. We need to start worring about what is happening in our own country. We have homeless, starving people right here in our own country.

Immigration is legal. The problem is that there are millions that decided they didn't want to go through the legal way of doing it so they are ILLEGAL immigrants. We find peace by showing that we are tolerant of those that follow laws, and intolerant of those that don't.

Immigration is already legal, if it's done according to the law. I think it's important to control our border, but it's also important to make legal immigration work better, because it's clear there is a place in our economy for immigrant workers. People who have tried to do it right spend years and thousands of dollars going through the process. Some give up and go home. Many illegal immigrants say it's easier just to bypass this burdensome process and get fake IDs so they can start work. Any solution to our illegal immigrant problem has to involve fixing the process of legal immigration.

Legalizing the illegal aliens will just prove one thing: That if you shout loud enough, and play the racist card, you'll get what you want ... I'll say it again, and I'll say it until I'm blue in the face: ILLEGAL means ILLEGAL means BREAKING THE EFFING LAW!!!! Apart from anything else, do we want to lead the U.S. down the path towards anarchy? If we ignore the immigration laws, we might as well forget about tax laws, traffic laws, anything ... so folks, if you want to legalize illegal immigrants, go on, legalize tax dodging, marihuana, speeding offences ... if not, why not? Well, it's not the first time it's come about, either. At issue is the capacity of other countries to systematically abuse our historically generous immigration policy. They say the earliest americans came from asia, then it was spaniards, then came europe. All wanted the same thing, a new life in the New World, complete with opportunities etc. Enter the 21st century, the conquistadors are long-ago dust, and the public is wondering whatinhell kind of dope the government is smoking...and there've been some unsettling things discussed such as the 'eminent domain' thing, and that one right there tells you that someone's got some massive social engineering in mind. Luckily, the public's caught wind of this, and the immigration debate's a symptom of a lot of people starting to wake up, and realize that
we ARE starting to run out of land...so, the next phase of the expansion will be inland...and you're already seeing like, government programs to put guatemalans or something on farmland.

The question here is, 'how far is america willing to bend in order to satisfy the demands of 3rd world countries'? And, sadly, the answer is, the more you give, the more they take, the more they want. So, someone in Congress has to stand up and say NO MORE!!!! That starts by building a good border with Mexico, and while it might not be hermetic, or completely inviolable, it will serve to stop some 80-90% of the illegal traffic with that country.
Then, the next task is Canada. The border with Canada's long, and probably a real bear to monitor. Well, turns out that's the kind of place the bad guys like to go, 'cause they're betting on not getting caught. But, they can be caught, and arrested, or turned back, and Canada can stand up and solve their own problems, too, so we don't have to. Mainly, our neighbors have been kind of lazy and deficient in that dept., and left america holding the bag.
We seem to do that a lot, lately, and it's a great justification for paying REALLY CLOSE ATTENTION during the next election in November, so that we really get some sharp cookies in office that 'get it', and aren't just in office to line their pockets with taxpayer loot. Honesty, representation, educated, basically the whole picture. That'd sure be nice...

Immigration is legal, many immigrants follow the law year in and year out and immigrate here legally all the time.

It's the people that don't respect our immigration laws and break into this country that is the problem. Certainly you're not proposing a law that would make it legal for anyone to walk into this country from anyplace in the World and just work and stay for as long as they wanted are you?

Immigration is legal. What we are talking about is legalizing illegal immigrants. It gets back to the old question of whether it is legal to steal food if you are hungry. Okay, how about if you only steal food that nobody wants or how about food that most people don't like and wouldn't eat anyway? When is something that is illegal alright because it helps some people and doesn't really appear to hurt anyone? It is a complicated question, there are no easy answers.

Immigration is already legal, the problem is from those who come in without going through the proper channels, America is still a land of opportunity to many people around the world and we welcome thousands every year with open arms, as long as you go through proper channels.You don't mind inviting people into your house when you know they're coming, but you get a little pissed when they sneak in through the back, it's sorta the same thing. By the way, America is not the only country dealing with this issue, a lot of European countries have their own version going on also.

Immigration is legal. Crossing our borders without permission is not.
Everyday, thousands of our neighbors to the north, cross our borders, for shopping, tourism,and even work. They don't have a problem with following the rules. Why do our neighbors to the south have such a problem obeying our laws?

Anybody know the unemployment rates, rates of people living in poverty both to our north and south?

NO WAY!!!! Reagen granted amnesty in 1986, when there were between 1-3 million illegals. Did it HELP to legalize those illegals??? HELL NO,it only ENCOURAGED even MORE of them to come here, HOPING for the same thing!!!! Now, they estimate between 11-30 million ILLEGALS are here. Personally, i think it is MORE than that!!!
Amnesty just leads to MORE lawbreakers sneaking into the country!!!

We have legal immigration now. It is the illegals that are throwing a child's fit because they are breaking several laws and are a threat to national security and they know it. As for someone who said make the immigration laws easier, why? There are still lots of people who come here legally, so why do we have to make it easier for a bunch of deadbeats who break our laws to be here and sponge off of us and our system?

This issue is flatly not important. There aren't enough illegal immigrants in the borders to actually cause the problems that racist hicks are shouting about. Congress and the President are using this issue to keep us occupied so we stop yelling at them about Iraq, the economy, our foreign relations, the state of education, corporate outsourcing, congressional scandal, and a slew of other issues that actually matter. They did the same thing with Gay Marriage during the election. It's simple misdirection.

I completely understand where you are coming from. Simply though immigration is already legal, if immigrants have the proper papers to get over to the U.S. But it isn't legal when you don't have proper papers, or is creating fraudulent activities.

I mean think about it though; what is the main issue? We don't want illegal aliens to come into our country to do the dirty jobs we americans don't want to do; but let me ask you something then, what's the purpose of the americans outsourcing and bringing the job to them? Isn't that just the same thing? So should we then blame the other countries for taking our job still?

Alright we keep talking about how other countries are coming into the United States illegally and taking away things that so called "americans" deserve or is fighting for correct? But alright what about the many americans that travel to other country to run from the law? Like to Mexico or Canada or hell to Europe even. So why is it that when the immigrants want to come to America it is so hard, but it is easy enough for the americans to go into other countries after they've done something wrong in their own. I mean the illegals are here because they want to work, although it's illegal for them to it's hard earn legit work i.e. janitorial jobs, field works. But yet the americans that have done something wrong can easily go into the other countries, when they are crooks and murderers?

First off, it's not that immigrants don't want to come into the states legally. It's the damn government making it hard for them to come in legally; but yet they so call encourage immigration? If you look at it, how much has it gone up? Before getting the legal proper paper to be a citizen or a permanent alien was around 100 to 200 dollars. Now for the application process alone it's that much. Hmm, we want them to do it legally but yet we want to charge them so much that they can't? Even though we shouldn't because then they could do the dirty jobs americans don't want to do.

Oh and please don't give me that nonsense that Americans are losing jobs because of these illegal immigrants. Many Americans don't want to do the jobs immigrants do. Between sweeping the floor; who do you think would jump at the opportunity? Would you american's want to be servants or house keepers to other americans. NO BECAUSE you would think that's degrading yourself. So before you tell someone that they are so called "unworthy of a job" make sure you yourself would want to do it. I'm not choosing sides, I'm just annoyed that when people want something they only see one thing. They don't look at the big picture.. such as you want them out of your country but then what rights would you have to travel to theirs? I mean many americans say they want the mexicans to leave their home. So then why would you on your next spring break go to theirs for vacation?

Last words: Americans do not need to be angry at immigrants for coming into this country illegal or legal, you know why, because if they come here they are still working for you americans. So americans if you are mad they're taking your job, don't get mad at immigrants, get mad at the AMERICAN employer that hired them. there you go. I'm finish

I think this is becoming a very divisive issue that is not productive.

The problem is, whatever is decided someone will not be happy about it. I think this is an emotional issue that hopefully cooler heads will prevail....

I support amnesty because living on the border, I sympathize with these people and I see first hand their plight.

Whatever happens, I am willing to accept what will be decided, I may not be happy with it, but that's what a democracy is all about...
