"He was known in that role as a pragmatist, which seems to fit the Obama administration profile,” said Wayne Cornelius, director of the Center for Comparative Immigration Studies at the University of California San Diego.

It was a role for which Bersin has received criticism, however, particularly after the Clinton administration's 1994 implementation of Operation Gatekeeper, which combined border fencing, surveillance equipment and the addition of more than 1,000 Border Patrol agents in San Diego to control what was then the nation's busiest illegal border crossing.

Human smuggling traffic subsequently shifted east, first to the Imperial Valley, then to Arizona. Since then, thousands of people have died while attempting to cross inhospitable stretches of the border that had previously seen little traffic.

Pedro Rios of the American Friends Service Committee, a human rights group in San Diego affiliated with the Quaker faith, criticized the choice of Bersin to reprise the border czar role.

“Many people might say he is perfect for the job, that he is the type of person that would know how to deal with this new border dynamic with an iron fist,” Rios said. “But that doesn't respond to the needs of border community members who are still dealing with the errors of policies in the mid-1990s, like Gatekeeper.”

No, not unless he wants to plant land mines all around our southern border. Also, a liberal wimp like Nappy is not going to appoint someone who is really going to crack down on illegal aliens. Remember, to Democrat politicians an illegal alien is an "Undocumented Democrat Voter."
