The Americas as a whole is made up completely of immigrants, including the "Natives", (they just got here WAY sooner than everyone else.) The US has always been discerning about it's immigrants although the criteria has been in constant flux. My great grandfather was checked for TB, and had his teeth examined like you would a horse at Ellis Island, They didn't ask too much about education and skills at the time. Now, we no longer need fodder for the factories, (because we have so few anymore). We need educated and skilled immigrants, and that is not the kind you get sneaking across the border. Time change, needs change.
I have a few friends from a couple of the countries you mentioned, and they fit the skilled and educated category. But the rank & file of those lands can offer us little here today. We don't need an illiterate Latin American, because we don't need illiterate US citizens. It's not racism, it's just economic needs of the day. No one else is jumping to the head of the line to take these immigrants, why single out the US?

Immigrants contributed perhaps 10% of the American Way of life. Citizens fill the military cemeteries, make the country work, invent most of the stuff we use today, and only have one vote. Sooo.. our wonderful Congress wants the illegal aliens voting for them... they tell everyone the American People are totally incompetent. Don't believe it.

The USA was completely made by immigrants, so the tradition of immigrants coming into this country contribute to how great of a nation we are. If you're talking about illegal immigrants, then the news companies are talking about Mexican immigrants, BUT they just use the broad term to include them all.

The nations you mention do actually produce legal immigrants with actual job skills. We're just so used to seeing the unskilled illegal variety that we tend to tar them all with the same brush. Even the President has now done this. Obama just stabbed all legal immigrants in the back by equating them to illegal migrants in a national speech. He shouldn't expect many naturalized citizens to vote Dem in Nov. OR in 2012.
