I walk down my street in Edinburgh and NEVER hear a Scottish voice as I pass..... shocking.... and it's mainly a flood of eastern europeans that started to come in 2005 when the eu expanded and the UK, unlike France etc put NO limit on the intake of people wanting to come and work here. Doh!

So much for only letting in people with skills that can't be found here. That's complete bollox as well.

I spoke to one guy recently (nice guy with new kid and wife in tow) at the CAB and he is a BOUNCER! I mean..... c'mon..... I ask you, can we not supply even our own bouncers in the UK?

My mates in the building industry are fighting like crazy to get employment at a fair wage and that was BEFORE the credit collapse. I'm sure they are not alone.

Saw the same sh*t in my Doctor's surgery which was full of european mothers and kids last time I was there.

The government has NO idea how many foreign nationals are in the country and if they tell you different THEY ARE LYING.

I'm no bigot, but I feel the government pooped their pants on this one! and we are left to struggle. Maybe we should upsticks and go and live in Poland or Latvia.... maybe have a chance of getting a job and it would be a LOT cheaper!

Yes they are allowing in as many immigrants as they want. Its a form of control, they're controlling the voting patterns for the next thirty years by making sure there are millions of new labour supporters.

Are you being sarcastic?They have increased immigration by a factor of 5 since they got in power, for ideological reasons more than anything to do with the economy. If you are unhappy about this i suggest that vote for the conservatives in the next general election. As they have pledged to bring immigration back down to the normal levels of 50000 annually, which we had from 1971 to 1997. In the mean time a vote for the BNP in the euro elections in June might affect government policy.

I wish there where, if these people want to come and live in our country in such significant numbers, they could at least be courteous enough to learn out language and customs and follow them instead of having us british bend over to theirs. The government needs to toss a significant number of them out and stop income of immigrants for a while.

You know what, i am sick to death of Polish people getting the blame for all of the UK's problem. While i do not think we SHOULD be in the EU, the fact that we ARE means that, hypothetically, we COULD go over to Poland and work in the same way that they have been working over here. Its easy to blame the Polish for the immigration issue in the UK because you can't be classed as racist (as they have the same skin colour as us) but lets be real, it is immigrants from South Asia and Africa who are really putting a strain on our resources. No doubt i'll probably be called a racist for saying that but to be honest i (as well as most Britons i know) am beyond caring now. Something needs to be done about this situation and soon. I'll reiterate again, Eastern Europeans are not the problem. I'm bracing myself for the thumbs down..

Firstly, all members of the EU are allowed into the country without any prior checks. Secondly, it is not a prerequisite for them to know the language, values or customs of the United Kingdom. This is appalling. The more overpopulated we become, the more Britain loses its sense of identity.

It may be true that there was a time immigrants would come into the UK to fill vacancies and that would keep the country at almost full employment.

However, further uncontrolled immigration would lead to a drain on the taxpayer as there are now British born people requiring jobs more than ever before. It's time we implemented an Australian based system whereby skilled migrants are considered only. .

Obviously not, that is why some politicians are suggesting an amnesty, they haven't got any idea how many are here now, they are useless. All the government are good at is lining their own pockets, at the tax payers expense. The decisions they make do not affect them, but have massive impact on the ordinary persons lives. Gordon Brown was not elected, so much for democracy and as for freedom of speech, what a joke. England is a dictatorship, pretending not to be. I wish when I walked down the street, all I heard was Polish, alas, it is not.

UK government could even stop all immigrants but it would have nothing in common with Polish people, because they are not imigrants they are EU citizens. They have the same rights in your country as you. Learn more about EU and the competences of the govermnment of your own country please.

They're controlling immigration about as much as a cheese sandwich does, in other words totally useless, actually the cheese sandwich is more useful, you can eat it! No, the UK government and the Glasgow Herald are of the same opinion, more Immigrants? Yes Please! The problem is that the people that actually live in Britain, the people that have to live with the decisions of Whitehall aren't quite as keen, in fact we don't bloody want them here, we've got enough problems of our own!

Yeh, I am all for mixing all nationalities through all countries, its the only way forward IMHO, but it does seem to happen more here in such a tiny place

added - wow among some good points on all sides of the debate, there are some shockingly racist people on this site! But then there are lots of them in the UK too, one of the reasons I am saving up to leave this country, hope I get treated better where I move to than some people do when they come here!
