Is the moniker 'land of immigrants' to describe USA and Canada a blatant hypocrisy?

we all know the history, we all know who did what to whom, etc. so then, why the north american hypocrisy. we know a man names Columbus mistook the natives for Indians, so why continue to call native americans Indians? all minorities have hypenated identities, like afro-american, asian-american, etc. but this same hypenation doesn't apply to white ppl. white ppl conveniently ask minorities "where are u really from?", when a minority says he's from anywhere in north america. but the white folks don't get asked the same Q by minorities. we all know where the majority community came from - Europe, so we can call white north americans, european-americans, but we don't!
this two-faced attitude belies the notion that US and Canada are land of immigrants. even white ppl are immigrants, but they conveniently choose to ignore this fact. by calling the real native americans- Indians, they make it seem as if these ppl also are immigrants. so we are expected, and taught, to believe that everyone came from somewhere else except for white ppl? such propaganda and brainwashing of minorities is continues w-o any questioning it. next time u see a white person, feel free to call him 'european-american' and see his reaction. but will u? when will the carefully constructed and learned identities of north americans end?

You are right of course, it is hypocrisy, have a star. Your question is no more a rant than the cut and paste articles by the member with 17 accounts all beginning with "did you see this" or "what do you think about this", intelligence counts regardless of what some say or think, unfortunately some have problems recognizing it. |

If you want to take tha time to call me 'european-american', you are free to do so, but it's easier to just call me by my name.
In addition, I am perfectly aware of who my immigrant ancestors are, when they got here, and when they applied for citizenship. Nor do I call anyone Indian (unless they are from South Asia) but take the time to find out what they want to be called.
Maybe you just hang out with the wrong people |

No it isn't a blatant hypocrisy. A rant--described as a question however--is.
People can describe themselves however they choose. Most people identify for themselves their own labels....others just follow their lead. And there is a distinct difference between race and ethnicity--they are not the same thing at all.
I could be black, African American, Afro American or even colored. But when I encounter someone, the best thing to do is ask them if they have a preference as to how to be referred to. Its amazing the diversity of answers you get from the same racial background. That, my dear, is where ethnicity and culture and personal choice comes into play
I could be Polish, Polish American, American, or even a yankee. I could go on and on--but my point is already made. And doing so would be a rant.
Methinks your horse is a bit high. Hope it doesn't hurt if you fall off . |

Lets put it another way. I am French, English, Welch, British and Navajo Indian. I call myself an American because I was born in America and my skin is white. Therefore, should we call me a French/English/Welch/British/Navajo American? |

tons on idiots here

i dont believe so |

I like this I' m a white guy and I would like the title Anlgo-saxon-American please. I am tired of getting less preferential treatment like an extra title like afican-american, or mexican american. Maybe we can have the anglo-saxon music awards as well and Mis Anglo saxon America to. Feel free to ask me I dont mind at all. |

Baloney. My grandparents on one side of the family came from Russia, which made them immigrants. Four centuries and some years before, my ancestors on the other side of the family came here from another part of Europe. They also were immigrants. A friend of mine immigrated from Ghana. She is an immigrant. I have met people who were given asylum here as political refugees from Iraq and elsewhere. They are refugees. Color, etc. has nothing to do with anything. An immigrant is an immigrant, period. BTW the ancestors of Native Americans were also immigrants, 10,000 years or so ago. That makes Native Americans the descendants of the first known immigrants to what is now known as North America. We are all immigrants, or the descendants of immigrants, or perchance, refugees, or the children of refugees. After that, how a person chooses to define their ancestry is their business, and should be respected. |

The moniker is a "nation of immigrants".
In truth, the US is a Nation of Americans.
If you buy into that, you are doing a great injustice to Native Americans and their many ancestors that are not necessarily full-blood.
The Reconquistas are from Spain and they don't realize that's in Europe. |

That is not the name the Canadians and the Americans use to describe their lands. And if you look at the Military Grave Yards, I believe you will agree.. those names were the names of American citizens, born and bred... God bless them all.
Land of Immigrants was a name dreamed up by La Raza when they began this effort to thug the American People. |
