From the European Union? You gotta be kidding. All the real Brits need the EU so they have a place to go when they sell up and move abroad so they won't be wiped out by taxes. Especially IHT.

yes the government should have stricter rules for immigrants,as does America if you have a criminal record you should not get in .i am not racist but it is harder for a British citizen to get a job these days than it is for a immigrant which is daft and how can u do a disclosure on them if they are not on our criminal records system

lets recap, if you look back 300 years into your history I'm pretty sure you would be shocked to find out what ethnicity you are or where your grand parents are from but i don't think so. they do the jobs we don't want to; the cleaners. but i think they should train to be nurses and more useful things than just cleaners. well if the ones that are coming in the country are bad make the systems harder for those ones and let in the hard working ones to make the UK even better.

Nothing wrong with immigrants but they should be working and not sapping the taxpayers money.
Then again, there are generations of british people who have never worked a day in their lives, is that any worse?

I suppose a lot depends on where you live in the UK - in Surrey Quays, London SE16 - as well as the countless Pizza leaflets shoved thru' the letterbox we get countless "do you need a cleaner, baby-sitter, dog-walker, ironing service, whatever" always from eastern-europeans. As a graphic designer I have local estate agent clients, rental returns are higher as private landlords boost the rent, lose their coloured tenants with DSS dependency and re-let to eastern europeans - visit Surrey Quays Shopping Centre, far less coloureds and a complete mixture of eastern european languages . . .

Immigration seems to be a western problem. We love our liberties yet can't understand why we have home grown and other types of terrorists. There as here these immigrants have difficulty assimilating into the culture and are often prey for those who seek to take advantage of them.
Immigration in the UK has been a fact of life for hundreds of years. When you have a prosperous nation everyone wants a piece of the pie. Who can blame them for casting their eyes upon seemingly greener pastures?
I like the attitude of Australia as far an immigration policy is concerned (age restrictions, gainful employment etc.).
America had a great immigration policy during and immediately after WWII. An immigrant needed an American sponsor to gainsay for their character and integrity, gainful employment waiting, a clear record with their local constabulary etc.etc.) Many times their wait was several years but they assimilated well and became productive citizens who loved their new country and the opportunities therein.
However, immigrants who have experienced theocratic governments in their homelands seem to have difficulty homogenizing into western societies. Instead of embracing our cultures they feel at odds and disenfranchised. Further seperating themselves from the society they hoped would bring them a new future and opportunity. What can be done about that I simply don't know.
Tony Blair's fault for UK immigration policy? I don't think so. You'll have to look back further in history for that beast of burden.

But then, perhaps immigrants should not wish to blow up the country they are immigrating to.

i had my teeth done on the NHS by a polish dentist.......... I cant get a an NHS English one. If they contribute then Im all for imigration...... only if they contribute

Immigrants generally bring more to this country than they take away. Doctors, nurses, academics, businessmen, manual workers ... the list is endless. Britain won't be as successful as it is had there been no immigrants at all. We have an aging society. Many pensions are expected to be in deficit, which means we are unlikely to get what we were promised. We need more young people to join the pension. Now we get young immigrants. We should be pleased that we manage to attract them here.
