Well, it's not quite the same. Back then, if you came to the U.S. you were on your own to fend for yourself. Now when the illegal invaders come from the south they demand free food stamps, free healthcare, free housing, free education and that we need to accommodate speaking Spanish for them. I was born into a country and a city that was civilised, safe, civil, intelligent, clean; free from drugs, guns and stabbings by the day, free of singler mothers with mixed kids and no fathers who only pop round to steal the TV to buy drugs because their mugging of old ladies went badly that day; where women were free to be part of the human race and not a chatel covered from head to foot in a black sheet in some backward and barbaric state of slavery that would be utterly unacceptable if I forced it upon a britsh woman; where making 12 year old's marry each other was child abuse, but not now if you're a gypsy (and my mum was an Irish Romany and she wouldn't have wasted her spittle on those people) and a generally respectful courteous decent place to be.
Now it is a stinking hell hole, where no one is safe to walk the streets, where politeness is seen as weakness, where our high streets are starting to look like rows of hovels in the african bush, where all things british are sneered at and maligned in favour of all things foreign no matter how repugnant - so no, I wish they would all get in a leaky boat and clear off. And reading between the lines of your contentious question, I think you probably do as well.
As I said in an earlier answer, they kicked out that evil tyrant Ian Smith from Rhodesia, and look what they've got instead and I agree with one of the other answerers when he says, why didn't they stay at home and fight for their own freedoms like my forefathers had to instead of worming their way into our country only to turn it into a degraded heap of cr*p like the place they abandoned.

back in the day if you came to the UK you had to get a job and behave yourself-otherwise you had no chance of surviving-this is why most of the british populace are tolerant of the "1950's" immigrants-they have earned the right to be here.

but today all the immigrants are after are the benefits-they are not interested in looking for legitimate work.

some of these people who preach persecution in their homeland can be found spending their handouts or ill-gotten gains in our city centres on a saturday night getting drunk and harrassing the local women-i personally have been involved in altercations trying to protect young ladies from the grabbing hands of immigrants. (on one occasion a young lad tried to do the decent thing and defend his young lady from a kosovan-this immigrant went to get his mates-it could have turned nasty but for the fact we were having a lads night out-all 15 of us-mostly black-belts-so we all stood up for the lad and the kosovans decided they weren't having any of that so buggered off)-and these people claim to have been threatened with death back home.

and at the end of the day we are only an island-we can hold so many and thats it!-no more room at the inn.

No, not so nice to see them at all thank you. We are not living in the days of the pilgrims or the signing of the Declaration of Independence. We are living in the days of welfare handouts, disease-ridden people handling our food, and pressing ocho for espanol. I'm not happy that the Europeans pushed the Native Americans out of their land, but the past is past people. Mathematicians out there, at the rate people are coming into our country illegaly, and the increased rate at which the majority of them breed, how much longer until we become a third world country? We can't afford to keep up with the current costs of housing illegals, what's going to happen in ten years? These people whine that they come to save themselves and their families from an impoverished nation. That they are hardworkers and strong people. Why not use that strength to revolt and stand up to your own govenment and make them improve your country? Why not, sheer laziness, easier to come here and be hand fed. Do any of these aliens who have the luxury of sharing a border with the U.S. give any thought or concern to people not so lucky, who are starving in Africa or other continents, but can't just run across to the U.S.? I seriously doubt it. And for all of you bleeding hearts who cry for the 12 million poor souls who have struggled to break into our nation, why don't we just start sending ships to the poor and downtrodden around the globe and welcome them all into the good old USA. Do you think that would improve this country?

The citizenry is simply a group of chumps. Even the immigrants themselves catch on to the way they're being misused after a while. There is no reason that Mexico and most of Central American couldn't become more like the US, with universal free K-12 education and a reasonable level of social services.
