Just married, need to update alien card, what's the best route?

I just got married and when I went to change my name at the SS office, they said I had to talk to the INS. Well I can't seem to get a hold of anyone there, because I don't want to waste too much time or money dealing with this.
What is the best route?
Just apply for alien card renewal and citizenship ?
I dunno. help please?
Additional Details
SS will not allow me to change my name until I talk to INS. I just want to make sure that I don't over pay for services, when I could have taken a cheaper route.

What visa did you have when married? F-1; H-1; other. Have you filed I-485? Did you already have SS# ?
edit: you need to have INS/ICE update from resident alien to permanent resident status. As you are married to citizen and are now a permanent resident / citizen. This may require completion of I-485 if you have not already done so. |

Does your country allow name changes? The US isn't going to change your name unless your country allows the name change. Changing the names of other countries citizens is a no-no! If it is legal and the other country allows it and everyone is in agreement then they will allow a name change.
My wife's US passport has her US name (Chinese given name, new middle name, my family name)
Her ROC passport has her Chinese name (Chinese family name, Chinese given name)
She had to become a citizen in order to change her name in the US. |

Change your name at the SS office and then take the documents to the immigration office to change the name on your green card. If you have married a US citizen then apply for naturalization on the grounds of being a spouse of US citizen. This process takes time due to investigations and interviews and will cost you close to $1000. |
