Kitchen nightmares U.S vs UK: why is it there seem to be more aspiring youth working at UK?

kitchens doing the basic jobs and learning the craft of cooking, and in the US version, most of the kitchens are staffed with Mexicans who mostly don't speak English and don't much care about the food.

I am not saying which country's restaurants are cleaner. I am just saying that the way U.S restaurants run their kitchen(getting only illegals and the cheapest labor and sub-standard working conditions) will eventually be detrimental to the whole food industry

If you look into kitchens in an area of the US where there is a lot of illegal immigration, the help will be mostly illegals. This is because the illegals will work for less, and the business owners are greedy. Often the restaurant owner has 'off the book' help that he doesn't pay workman's compensation insurance or any other taxes on. The US government does nothing to stop illegal immigration or the hiring of illegals, and hires them themselves. Maybe in the UK they enforce laws better.

In parts of the US with little or no illegal immigration(is there still such a place?), most of the kitchen, labor and other 'starting jobs' are done by teenage kids or recent high school graduates.

Also if companies pay a decent wage, they get legal citizen applicants. In California the minimum wage is about $8/hr. Near me, an In-N-Out Burger restaurant pays $14/hour with medical benefits and it's all teenage kids working. In some parts of the US, $14/hr would attract job middle aged job seekers.

I dont know if its different in the US but here in the UK being a chef is a well respected and skilled job. I think alot of people want to do it.

There are alot of rubbish places here as well though. But even pubs often do very good home made food.

Gordon Ramsay's Gastro Pub in London was accused of using boil in the bag Coq Au Van and ready prepared meals recently.

Gordon Ramsay's London Restaurant has also failed to make San Pellegrino's list of the 100 best restaurants in the world.

Even worse for Ramsay, Marcus Wareing, who opened his restaurant at the Berkeley Hotel after an acrimonious split with Ramsay, has made a dramatic entry on the list at No 52, and has been virtually guaranteed a place in next years San Pellegrino top 50.

Still things can't be that bad for Gordon, he's just bought a lovely new Ferrari.

We don't really have any Mexicans in the UK. Also, there are not many Mexican restaurants. Beans and Tacos and stuff are not popular. Most people will take a girl to some sort of steak bar if they are trying to look smart and impress, or go to a curry house if they are going to eat what they really like.

Have you seen the flithy places in the UK show? How is that more caring about food?
I'd say both shows present equally gross places to eat

You seem to think that employees choose their work. If there is cheap pliable third world labor anywhere it is because the employer wants it.

So you don't have all the outbreaks of e coli and salmonella over there?

Because our American youth is lazy. They believe they're too good to take a menial job working in a kitchen cooking or washing dishers.

Baby
Because the Mexicans are trying to earn and the American youth of today want to make it big at once & not work to get there.

Not putting down the Americans though, there are some of them out there that try, but with the economy situation and everything that is going on they are just being held back.

And for the original answer debating the UK vs. US it's just a difference in the people really, because look at it.

The economy in the UK is better and the individuals there are willing to cope with any job they obtain increasing their GDP. But in America right now, ECONOMIC situations, and the people themselves are seeing this, is a major cause and effect of this. Working with the current situations are not affordable. The expenses of getting back and forth to work is probably a bigger fraction of this particular industry's workers wages. And with this situation they rather stay at home and not work at all.

The economy is bad, but who will it take to bring this situation out from under the debts? It is those same workers that refuse to work.
The country needs a strong and willing workforce to turn the economic crisis around and honest Employers.

America needs it Workforce to pull them out of this close-to-depression state.

AND EMPLOYERS NEED TO CONSIDER THEIR WORKERS AND KEEP UP THE WORKFORCE BY KEEPING WAGES AT THEIR APPROPRIATE RATES AND SO FORTH.
