My first comment is to MISTERSATO! Illegal immigrants do the jobs Americans won't do, because they are low wage jobs that Americans can not afford to do. Illegals take the low wage jobs and live off the state. The money they do make, they send back to Mexico, or wherever they came from. They are using American jobs to fund their own government!
I agree that the American citizens should NOT have to learn Spanish. I live in New Mexico and all the good jobs require that you be bilingual. So, yes, I feel we are being forced to conform to their ways. I lived in California and I was told that I had to take at least two years of Spanish in order to graduate. My husband and his siblings were told the same here in New Mexico. This debate has been going on for years, but it does seem to be getting worse. |

I have a big problem with that. If they want to live here, they need to learn English. It is ridiculous that we would be made to learn Spanish. Would we all move to Germany and expect them to learn English? Not likely. |

Yes, I do think it is wrong. Why? Because it will lead to another kind of equal employment. I will get turned downed for jobs that I am more qualified for because I don't speak spanish. Those who do will be entitled to benefits that I have contributed to my entire life. |

English should be the ONLY option ANYWHERE in this country. There should be no "For Spanish type 2", or "Spanish menus available". Anyone wanting to live here needs to learn our language. Our government needs to grow a spine and start enforcing some of these things. It's already gotten waaay out of hand just look at the two American flags at the bottom of this page. One for English and one for Spanish. WTF is all I can say about that. |

Yes it's wrong that they don't speak english in our country. Hmmmm...maybe thats just another reason they are illegals as one of the requirements of becoming a US citizen is to speak english. |

Actually yes, they do have to learn the language to get anywhere. If you look at the ones that don't speak English they live in trashy trailers while the ones that do speak it live in at least a more or less nice neighborhood. Let me ask you something, what makes you think Spanish is going to become mandatory in the U.S.? Sure there are a lot of people speaking Spanish but that doesn't mean the whole country has to do it. If you go back to the times of massive immigration from Europe, the first generation usually didn't speak English right away and they even had their own neighborhoods where they spoke their native language (German, Italian, etc.) Now, let me warn all those that are fixing to give me thumbs down that I gave an educated answer and if you do so then you will just show that you have no way of arguing back and therefore TRY to hurt me. |

First of all thanks to these lovely immigrants we have to pay extra taxes for their children to go to school, when most of them don't even pay taxes. Second of all why should we be required to learn Spanish, I agree with everyone else that they should be required to learn English. Third of all how come America wants us to honor the Hispanic culture, when African Americans have been enslaved for hundreds of years, Native Americans land were stolen, and Asian Americans face bigotry. Why Hispanic people, why are they so special? I understand that they are the main minority...but it wasn't like that before. I don't know about you but I hate it when someone speaks Spanish around when they know good and well they can speak English. That's very rude. If learning Spanish should be required then everyone should be required to learn sign language or something else. I'm sorry but that's bull!!! |

No it won't. They came HERE, we speak English "HERE". WE didn't go THERE. If we went "THERE" we would learn Spanish. THEY need to learn OUR language to fit into OUR world (country). |

Not requiring Spanish has certainly NOT stopped them from coming in the past. Do you really believe that just because we now offer information in Spanish that it will make more of them come? English is NOT the native language of this country. Ask any Native American. WE made the natives learn our language after we kicked them out of their own country.
Maybe we are dealing with "what goes around comes around?" |

Yes it is wrong if it is mandatory to speak Spanish!!
I have no problem with learning another language, I speak German fluently. America is the melting pot and has millions of immigrants, everybody knows that.
Why should Americans learn to speak Spanish just to speak with all the illegals in this country?? Shouldn't they learn to speak English if they want to work and live in this country???? Shouldn't they conform to our society??? |

Spanish will never become mandatory- and English shouldn't be- either. Since ALL schools in this country are based in English, it's inevitable that all the kids that go through them- will learn a certain amount of English (and it's the law here- that ALL children must get an education). So as time passes, the longer an immigrant lives here, the more they'll "assimilate" into the larger society, & the more they'll speak & act like everyone else. It make take a few generations...-but it always happens. |

Spanish should be taught as an optional language just like every other language. -- |

1. Learning Spanish is NOT going to be mandatory.
Even learning ENGLISH is not mandatory.
2. Yes, I think it would be wrong. |

I think making almost anything "mandatory" is wrong. The gov (and that would translate "the people") has to learn we can NOT legislate morals & a whole lot of other stuff--like forcing anyone to learn any language --one just has to accept the consequences of actions (or in-action). there's way too much legislating going on. |

I think that they should have to learn English. I don't think it should be mandatory for us to learn Spanish but at the same thing I think we would ignorant to think that we should only know English. I think that learning a different language would be great but I dont think we should to it to fit the likes of illegals. |

It is? Please cite a source for this information. I speak both languages but don't spread lies like this.
I think it's smart to speak two or more languages. The problem is getting everyone here to speak English. Learn it before you come here, or youre not very intelligent. |

Learning anything is always benificial...if people all over the world can learn English in their country, why can't American learn Spanish?
I am from Pakistan but live in USA...seeing so manySpanish speaking people here, it is a good idea. |

Because unfortunately, minorities started complaining, and nowadays, if you complain long enough, whine hard enough, and get enough people to join you.....you win. Although that can't be said for every issue that gets confronted with the government (sometimes you do need to complain and be strict about it). But when people start looking for equality and they get it, they tend to push further and further, until they themselves are the sole benneficiary. |

English should be the official language.if i was living in another country i would need to learn the language.it really sucks to be totally qualified for a job but not get it because you cant speak Spanish. |

Our ancestors had to learn English....they should too. And I have a Spanish minor and I say this....bunch of idiots in DC that want to make things more complicated. They should spend more time focusing on feeding hungry children and having better education....there are people in this country that can't even speak English good and it's their primary language so go figure. It's all politics. |

I really don't think it will become mandatory to learn Spanish. Where did you get that information??? This is America... Although bi-lingual is considered good, Spanish will not become the #1 language. Why would they force American citizens to learn a language that is not the native tong. |

Oh that's terrible... What are we going to do now? They are asking us to use our brains more!
First, check your sources... You can't force students to take math in their senior years much less you'll be able to force them to learn spanish.
Second, so if people had to learn a new language, wouldn't that be a good thing? Most people from most countries in the world speaks at least 2 languages. Let alone Europeans who usually speak at least 3 or 4 languages.
Even most sudanese young people living in refugee camps in Kenya (in extreme poverty) know how to speak 4 or 5 languages.
So would it really be that bad that Americans would be expected to speak another language?
I would disagree if it would have to be spanish, I mean, if people wouldn't have any choice. But it would be a great idea that people in this country would learn at least one language of their choice... |

yes I think it would be wrong, but its not going to happen. |

I think it should be mandatory that all American students learn at least 2 other languages other than English just to come up to par with the rest of the world!!! |

I don't know if it will become mandatory anytime soon, BUT the population is already 50% English speaking, 35% Spanish speaking, 10% Polish or Russian speaking, and 5% other. |
