Lets change the IMMIGRATION laws??What do we do??

We are all against illegal immigration, but is there some kind of medium that you would vote for.For instance, i dont agree with deporting someone who has been here for lets say 10 years, has 2 kids in school, works, and never has broken the law. These people should have to pay a fine, and go through the normal process to gain citizenship, no shortcuts. What is a good solution? How many years should be taken into consideration.?Facts are facts, these people are here, why ruin the lives of their children?Or should we just deport every illegal, no if and or butts?I dont think this will happen, we must quit bickering like racist idiots and come up with some kind of decent plan in which we all win.I live in the heart of this problem, so I want this solved, but also understand the difficulties..Lets not make this a "race" issue, its about our laws.Time to change the laws.

i agree with your thinking.

But people are not liking that because they don't see "Deport all illegal immigrants" in your idea.

don't forget the terrorist can come in from mexico and canada. keep them out so stricter to me

The problem is we have no way to stop more from coming in, and we have to many of them already. We can't tell who is who unless they are detained and processed, those who do not qualify for citizenship are mixed in with those who would qualify.

Also many of the ones you describe (working here for years with children) are NOT being deported, they are being given humanitarian waivers. The ones being deported have existing deportation orders and criminal records.

For example look at that Elvira chick, yes she has a US born child AND has existing deportation order AND committed a felony (identity theft)

If she didn't have that deportation order or committed a felony she would not have been deported, she would have been given a waiver instead.

Um, I don't care what they do or how long they have been here. You state they don't break the law. What do you think illegal immigrant means. This is not a race issue it is ILLEGAL!

So while you are handing out US citizenship to every one who pays a fine. Remember under the current system half these people would not qualify for a visa.

What are you going to do about all the people trying to get into the country legally? Should you make the rules more lax for them? so they can come and work here.

Why ruin the child's life? The parent knows the responsibility of coming here illegal, and the affect on his/her family.

If I had known it was that easy to gain entry to the US and live here. I won't have bothered with the thousands of lawyers fees, medicals bills, and background checks to come and live here. I would of just come on a plane on a visa wavier and never left! Would you give me citizenship if I pay a fine - it will probably be cheaper than the lawyer fees!!?

Then I don't have to go through all the hassle of following the US immigration laws!

Let's try enforcing the laws, first, just to see how they work out.

Once internal enforcement has forced most illegals to return home (some through deportation, but most for lack of incentive to remain as jobs for illegals dry up), and the border has been secured, then, we could look at how great the need for immigration really is, and increase legal immigration accordingly. (OK, or decrease, but I honestly think an increase would be obviously needed at that point).

Call me a racist....I dont care. I am tired of the Fact that THESE people are here ILLEGALLY PERIOD ! They are not taking the jobs Americans dont want......just the opposite... they are doing the jobs Americans would do IF businesses could get them to do it for half the price!!!! We dont need anymore LAWS...We need to ENFORCE the ones on the books now! GEEZ.....the very LEAST these people could do is LEARN THE LANGUAGE!!!!! Finally...I'm tired of a impotent government that cowtows to a bunch of Third World Chicken Pluckers. Yes....they are hard working BUT the FACT remains that.......if you here illegally......YOU ARE BREAKING OUR LAWS PERIOD!!!!!

have you ever got aressted for anything. I try to tell that Cop it was only weed. but yet he still said I am a criminal ( well really he said scum bag)( cause thats how Cops Roll withit) So the illegal thing = a big issue. and hey while we are on the subject it is about race. THE RACE TO GET THE MOST money. How can i get rich if I gotta pay this White guy a legitamte wage to live on, when i could pay some dirt poor Mexican, and he'll think he's got something. The ingnorance of a whole people is being played upon. funny thing is the Mexicans are the only ones that dont get it. Your a slave, wake up and smell the paycheck people. your college degree dont mean you cant dig a ditch, it means that you are smart enough to get someone who has no clue what it takes to live. When them Mexicans get 65 or 70 and retire and you still have to support them, then were will you want them to live here or Mexico. Mexican A comes to america works legaly. Pays taxes cause we all have to. Mexican B come here works and gets paid under the table ( no Documentation) Pays no taxes ( on what you dont know that he even make money) He's Apartment is probably in Your name cause he cant get one ( no Documentation) ( identification stolen latley?) your right it aint about race, it about My rights, You see I am from here and you aint, you got here illegally so you dont got rights and should not have rights. Go home express your desire to have rights, if that dont work you do what we did. You rebel against the counrty in your Case (Mexico), and there corrupted government system. Once you have beaten them down they will either leave the Country or be killed in the war, and then you form your own Government of the people for the people and by the people. Then some years later, let the government do what ever they want and just go with it and you'll have the same life we have here. THE GOOD OL USA. while I wrote this statement 5,000 more Mexicans swam acorss the boarder to get My job.

Lava, I'm with you on this one. We absolutely have to do something about the flood of illegals coming in to the country, and we have to handle deporting (for good) those who should not be here. However, we don't need to change the laws... we just need to ENFORCE the laws that are already there.

Our immigration laws are in place to protect those who are in this country legally (not just citizens, but all who are here legally) from criminality and disease. Those who come here illegally are an unknown quantity, meaning we have no idea of their criminal history or whether or not they carry disease that might jeopardize the safety of our communities. I have many clients in jail and juvenile hall who are illegals. Many of them have tuberculosis that doesn't get diagnosed until they get booked in jail... and some of these folks commit crimes of such severity and sophistication that there is NO WAY it was their first offense... That tells me they have criminal records in Mexico and may, in fact, have come to the US to avoid being sent to a Mexican Jail. In fact, some of the most sadistic offenses I've seen in my 10 years in this county have been committed by illegals. (I'm not saying ALL.. but some!)

So... yes. We do need to do something to protect ourselves from those who would NEVER qualify for a green card. However, those living law-abiding lives, who are raising their children here and contributing to our economy should be entitled to try to qualify for an amnesty program. Like you suggested... no short-cuts.

The argument many of the politicians are using is that strict enforcement and deportation of all illegals would create a vacuum in the economy that could be crippling. I don't claim to be an economics expert, but just looking at the numbers here in CA, I can believe the validity of their argument.

So, the only solution that accomplishes the most important arguments from both sides of the issue is a compromise in which we build a wall or otherwise enforce the border, those who would never qualify for a green card are deported, those who are currently in our prisons are deported, and those who meet the qualifications of an amnesty program are allowed to APPLY for amensty and legal immigration status. This way, the prison overcrowding problem is taken care of. The jobless rate goes down. Our communities are safer, and the economy doesn't take a huge hit, because we'd have those who qualified for amnesty to soften the blow.

As for the qualifications? Hmm... I'd say 10 years working in the US with no criminal history in the US or the country of origin, and they must pass a medical clearance and be updated on immunizations, or complete the TB series (which takes nine months) or whatever treatment they require, at their own expense. IF they qualify with those criteria, then they can apply.

If we handle it this way, people who would have otherwise qualified for immigration years ago (but didn't because the Mexican Gov't runs an immigration lottery and only those with money to pay off the officials get to apply for immigration to the US) and are contributing to their communities will get their immigration status. Those who would not qualify and are not contributing get sent back to Mexico and are prevented from returning.

It's not perfect... but it's a reasonable compromise.

Immigration has been an issue since the 18th century. Thomas Jefferson was the first President to pass an immigration law (of sorts) and the laws have been amended so many times throughout history that it makes the head swim.

Unfortunately, we as individuals have little power on how immigration is handled. Whether you are liberal or conservative, the best way to voice your opinions on the subject are to contact your Congressman/woman. It really does make a difference. Let them know how you feel. They work for YOU!

Why is it that so many immigrants come to this country Legally, and others feel they can come when they want, also known as illegally.

They broke the law.Game Over! They need to start over

anon
Are you planning to fund this touchy feely process? Why do we have to pay to investigate all 30 million of them? Laws don't need changing - they need enforcing.

I agree with you.If a person is in US more than 5 year, didn't brake the law and can prove employment for that period, then amnesty is the humane thing to do.If he is less than 5 years then offer them transit visa for 1 day so they can leave on their own without being deported. That will save the taxpayers money from deportation and will give that person a chance to come back legally. And finally make a good guest worker program something like the Canadian one, that they can come and work in certain areas where there is shortage or workers.Like farming, cleaning, nannies.

OKay lets not make this a "race" issue. Even though over 80% of illegal immigrants are Mexican and the fact that we make everything in Spanish to help illegal immigrants get by in this country. But hey it has nothing to do with race!

HLBellevino
Sorry Lavadog, but I don't see how allowing a person to stay based on how long they have successfully broken the law could be a realistic option. It would be like saying, "wow, you can stay because you have gotten so good at not being caught". What if a man were guilty of the vicious rape and murder of a twelve year old girl, but went undetected for twenty years? Say he went on to become a productive member of his community, a wonderful and faithful husband and father. Never broke another law. When the DNA evidence finally comes through and he is found to be the man responsible, do you think he should just be given a pass since he was so good for so long? Criminal behavior is criminal behavior. I am not saying that the punishment should be the same for the two offenses, but I AM saying that the appropriate punishment should be handed down for whatever the crime, no matter how much time has passed. If a person is here illegally, they should be deported, Period. And their children? Well, if they were born here they are American citizens and could stay. I imagine the families would want to stay together though.
So to answer the origional question, the immigration laws don't need to be changed, they need to be enforced.

Petey V3.3
There needs to be a solution where both the people and the gov can profit from. The people with clean backgrounds, and history of paying taxes should have a chance to stay if they pay fines.

Gravedigger
You can't deport millions of people. On a practical level alone, it's a logistical nightmare.

You want a solution? Grant amnesty to the ones already here. Yeah, I know, they came in illegally, but we've been benefitting from their presence, we didn't care about it a few years ago, so let's not get all uppity about it now.

Part Two, and here's my favorite, you fine the living X@*#$(! out of any employer who hires an undocumented illegal. You need more short term immigrant labor, then let's get Congress off their lazy grifting butts and pass a law upping the amount of temporary worker visas we allow. This means business has to report their income, which they hate, which is why they love illegal immigrants. They can underpay them and don;t have to report a thing.

Close that loophole and the problem solves itself.

See your question is flawed in the second sentence when you say never broken the law you're wrong they did just that (broke the law) when they sneaked in the U.S. so they have to go. They are criminals as soon as they cross the boarder illegally.

I'm an illegal immigrant. Shoot me now. But...
first: Not every illegal immigrant came here illegally crossing any borders.
second: if there is a way from beginning for illegals to be here legally and work and pay taxes legally you would not have illegal immigration problem
third: United States are profiting from illegals. 60% off illegals paying taxes and getting no benefits.
and last: More you going to after us - more we going to hide.
