When a Permanent Resident travels overseas you only need a valid passport, a valid green card and a re-entry permit if you will be gone for a year or more.They will not be looking for your previous visa and stamp since you are already a green card holder and you are now considered to have the privilege to live and work here in the US.Your I-94 is no longer necessary since again, you are already a green card holder.The visa, stamp and I-94 are important when applying for green card but since you surpassed that process already carrying a recent and valid passport with your green card is all you need.

A returning resident alien is not required to present a valid passport for reentry into the U.S. (see 8 CFR 211.2), although most will have one since a passport is often required for entry into a foreign country.

Your old passport is not important at this time now that you are a permanent resident. In order to return to the U.S. after an absence of up to one year, you need to present your green card. It is an acceptable WHTI travel document.

8 CFR 211.2(a)(2) exempts you from a passport requirement upon your return to the U.S. However, the countries you want to visit while you're gone might want you to have a valid passport which gives some people the impression that you need a passport when you return even though the regulation exempts you from needing a valid passport.

Yes. You can travel with your new valid passport and green card. You do not need visa to re enter to US since you have a green card.

since you have a green card? the old visa in your old passport is no longer necessary..you are safe to travel this way with the new passport and the green card
make copies of green card and passport and keep separately .
just make sure you do not stay out of the US too long,

u still need ur passport to travel outside of usa. but u dont need to worry that there is no visa printed on cause now if u are a legal resident u have ur green card. once u got the card they dont care for the printed visas cause those were prior to teh perm residence.
passport is good for 10 years anyways so...

I would definitely check into this before you leave the country. My wife has had her "green card" for over 20 years. She travels a lot and is STILL required to present her passport on exit and re-entry to the U.S.

A "green card" does NOT mean that you are a permanent resident. You are a Resident Alien. As such, if you are out of the country for over a certain period of time (1 year) they can and will not allow you to re-enter.

That being said, a couple of other posters mentioned that they would not be looking at your prior visas/stamps. They are right. Because obviously if your passport had been expired rather than lost and you got a new one, it wouldn't have those entered into it anyway.

It is suggested that you get your entry stamped in your new passport from the airport authority by providing them a copy of Airlines Passenger Manifest when you first entered in to United States.
Your passport my not be checked at the time of Exit from US, but when you re-enter United States with a fresh passport and holding a green card will cause problem.

I believe once you have the green card it means you are a legal resident. You no longer need a passport to get into the US. But spydr15 is right. You should contact the State Department. They are probably on line under US.gov.

I don't know where all these 'experts' get their information, but according to MY PRINT OUT of the official STATE DEPT. GUIDELINES.. you MUST HAVE A PASSPORT TO RE-ENTER THE U.S. AFTER JUNE 1ST.. and THAT MEANS EVERYONE including natural born Amerikan citizens...

They have been telling AmeriKans for OVER 3 YEARS TO GET PASSPORTS and most of them STILL HAVEN'T DONE IT.. so after June first, all those morons will be complaining here on Answers about how they need a passport and why didn't Obama tell them...

i came to the states with my parnets about 30 years ago.And we stayed there for 5 years but with long breaks in between.Welost all our papers and documents that support our residency. Now i want to go back to hte States, do i have to mention our stay? or not?
