Mexican immigrants MUST learn English and assimilate. Why is this so hard for some people to understand?

It's hard to understand because the government sends a different message. Years ago, the government didn't provide forms in other languages. The Polish, Germans, Russians, Italians etc... needed to learn the language and assimilate to survive.

Now, the government makes forms in various languages so people don't have the need to learn. Also, the government has become more liberal in their social programs so if you cannot land a decent job due to failure to learn the language, they can apply for government assistance in their native language.

The immigrants are only 1/2 at fault.... our government has given them the opportunity not to assimilate so they bear the brunt of the other half of the blame. That being said, perhaps we are at fault for letting the government get so powerful that they now ignore the voice of the people and continue with their agenda against our wishes.

Because this is AMERICA..and most of them are ILLEAGLE... and I hope you bleeding hearts that think it's ok for them to be here are saving a lot of your money for retirement. At the rate they're draining our social services, I won't be able to benefit from something I've been paying into for 30 years.

English is one of the hardest languages to learn so of course they are going to be a bit slow at it. Think of all of the slang we use in our language...and not to mention all of the different languages we use in ours. We have french, italian..and yes even spanish in ours so its going to be rough on them. I think everyone just needs to be a bit kinder to ALL of the "immigrants" coming to our country.

I doubt your ancestors learned Cherokee or Comanchee, etc., and I sincerely doubt you intend to. And were they not here first, shouldn't we be speaking those languages, the Mexicans were in CA and TX, etc. long before whites, why do they need to adapt? Are you to"special" to learn something new. Incapable, or to lazy, or are you just a bigot?

Hello!!!!!!!! It's not hard for you to speak english and learn it because you speak it! Don't you know that English is the hardest language to learn. Oh right, you don't because you spend so much time on the internet trying to think of dumb questions to ask.

I don't know...(shrug) I do believe that, also. If they want to live in this country and accept it's benefits, then they must pledge allegiance to it, speak it's language, and defend it if necessary!

They really should learn english, everybody else speaks english, it just makes sense.

beats me! i agree that they as well as other immigrants of different ethnicities should learn to speak english if they plan on living in america.

since our country is so diverse, i believe it is beneficial to speak languages other than english... but in a country where ENGLISH is the PRIMARY language... it should be exercised. any immigrant can still be tied to their culture and speak their native tongue amongst their family members and friends, but in PUBLIC as A LEGAL immigrant/citizen... speak english!

Agreed. I am all for anyone wanting to come to the US and becoming a citizen...but you should have to do it the right way. The US should adopt the UK version of immigration: you have to pass an english test.

It really doesn't matter what country the immigrant is from. They should learn the language of their new country.
It can only help them.

Some people have difficulty learning a new language and rely on people around them to assist them in their native language.

i agree that anyone who wants to live in the us should learn English. we can't baby these people. as long as they don't English our tax dollars go to taking care of them.

I was with you up till you used the word "mexican" immigrants.why not just say "immigrants" or do you think it should only apply for mexicans?As for learning their language I think it has a big part to do with the fact that some are too old to learn a new language and as for the rest well I'm sure they could if there were schools that could teach them.If you are so mad about the whole "press 2 for spanish" then blame the corporations not the people.They are the ones who are catering to them by putting that on there,because afterall in the end it all boils down to money,dinero,the benjamins or whatever it is you want to call it.Personally I'm waiting for all the american citizens to have their own version of May 1st but doubt that's going to happen,I mean if that happened what would half of this countrie's teenage population do? Actually stay home and talk to their parents'........*gasp* noooooo!

I think immigrants should learn English for there own benefit, I don't think they have to assimilate. Americans were the first to cross the border anyway, Americans illegally immigrated to Mexico first, then they wouldn't obey mexican laws then the United States helped those immigrants steal Texas, they they stole california, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado were all part of Mexico. Plus Spanish was being spoken within the territory of what know is the United States before English was.
