More & more Americans are moving to the Mexican Spanish-Speaking Nation !!! . . . Why ?

MEXICO CITY--In the last decade, an estimated half million Americans moved permanently to Mexico, making the United States' southern neighbor the country with the most U.S. expatriates in the world.

Not since the conclusion of the American Civil War -- when thousands of Southerners emigrated to Mexico -- have so many Americans moved to Mexico.

"A generation ago, older Americans would move to San Miguel, or Lake Chapala, or Mexico City," says Joann Andrews, who has lived in Merida, a large city on the Yucatan peninsula, since the 1950s. "But now, there are Americans setting down roots throughout the entire country. Americans have finally discovered the beauty of their most populous neighbor."

Officials at the American embassy estimate that there are "officially" more than 600,000 American citizens living permanently in Mexico, but concede the actual number is closer to 800,000. Treasury Department officials in Washington estimate that the number of Treasury checks -- Social Security, Veteran Administrations, tax refunds -- sent to Mexico is "in the ballpark of 750,000."

In Baja California, an estimated 100,000 Americans have created the first North American land rush of the 21st century. In the Yucatan peninsula, there are more Americans retirees than in some cities in southern Florida.

"When I first moved to Mexico, my family and friends thought I was nuts," says Skip Connors, a Vietnam veteran who has lived in Mexico since the 1990s. "But the quality of life I enjoy here, the friendships I have made and the peace of mind that I have living where people treat each other with respect and decency has saved me."

For decades, most Americans living in Mexico were retirees. But something of greater consequence than American-style retirement communities is taking shape. Check data on the cost of living and real estate to get started and you'll be closer to your answer. I have looked at houses in Mexico and I'll tell ya, 125,000us can buy a huge house in Mexico, instead of a starter home in most states. Plus the people are nicer, the food and weather is great, and the women are bonita. What else do you need?

Mona, over 12 million illegals in the USA proves your point. Suppose Mexico was invaded or attacked by another country ( not the USA )who would be the first country Mexico would call for help. The USA takes care of their own poverty we do not send it to another country.

No doubt for some Americans with sufficient funds and a yearn for a different lifestyle would enjoy the beautiful country of Mexico. But I am sure their children go to private schools, have private medical insurance, and get no benefits from the government of Mexico. I also assume that one of the first things they do is speak language of the natives (Spanish)

I know someone who moved to Mexico.
She has a higher standard of living in Mexico. Lives in a very nice home with a pool, and she has a maid and a cook. She would never be able to afford a maid and a cook in the US, much less the nice home.

this seems obvious to me. RETIREMENT!!!! it's increasingly difficult to retire at a reasonable age in the US, and still keep your standard of living.

second reason...we are extremists. we work outselves to the bone and then get this, "i've got to escape the rat race!!" attitude...and historically, for americans, mexico is this wonderous place where you get to live the 'good life.' sit on the beach and relax all day and all these other cliches. of course, that only happens to americans living on american money. americans working in mexico, making pesos...they know different.

You also have to say that the Americans that immigrate to Mexico are educated people with money that bring prosperity to Mexico and the people. There is a big different with the Mexicans that come to the USA illegally and poor and looking to better them selves with American benefits. The two are different and one of them, Mexican coming to the USA illegally by the millions is dangerous to the economy of the USA. The one that come to Mexico is an immigration with control and help Mexico and their economy. This is very important to know.!

Well, if that's where they want to live -- then let them go. Do you think maybe a large number of these people were immigrants from Mexico to begin with and after they worked in the USA as long as they wanted, they now can retire "high on the hog? I'd rather people go to Mexico than the Mexicans come here, especially those who come here illegally. Zero tolerance for illegals. Legals welcome.

and when they get there i hope these are their demands

1. Free medical care for their entire family.
2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services they might need, whether they use them or not.
3. All government forms need to be printed in English.
4. they want their kids to be taught by English-speaking teachers.
5. Schools need to include classes on American culture and history.
6. they need their kids to see the American flag flying on the top of the flag pole at their school with the Mexican flag flying lower down.
7. Please plan to feed their kids at school for both breakfast and lunch.
8. they will need a local Mexican driverâ€™s license so they can get easy access to government services.
9. they do not plan to have any car insurance, and they wonâ€™t make any effort to learn local traffic laws.
10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from the Pres. to leave them alone, please be sure that all police officers speak English.
11. they plan to fly the U.S. flag from my house top, put flag decals on their cars, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. they do not want any complaints or negative comments from the locals.
12. they would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, and donâ€™t enforce any labor laws or tax laws.
13. Please tell all the people in the country to be extremely nice and never say a critical word about them , or about the strain they might place on the economy.

Your statistics are outdated and immigrants should not be allowed to enter Mexico unless the Mexican government has approved them to enter. Have they?

On the other hand, Mexicans should not be allowed to enter the United States unless the government has approved it.

Do you know that the only people who are not immigrants in the United States are the Native Americans? The people who first came to America treated the real Americans very cruely. Everyone else has had to gain legal rights to enter and gain work permits - just like some Mexicans. Now how many people from other countries have entered the United States illegally.

And before I get all kinds of criticism, I think that all races should be able to legally enter the United States if our government has approved that number of immigrants from that country for each year. Many people from other countries deserve the same right to come to the United States of America where they can also make a living. Whether they live across the border or across the ocean shouldn't matter.

Foreigners and illegal immigrants have no say in how the country is run. They are not citizens. They have no voice as a US citizen period. Crossing the border illegally means that the US has to waste America's tax dollars to ship peope back from where they sneaked in from.

Also, ENGLISH is the language of the United States. Every person becoming a citizen of the United States needs to learn to speak it! We don't need our tax dollars paying for all kinds of other languages on government documents, signs, or anything else. SPANISH is the language of Mexico. People becoming citizens of Mexico learn to speak it!

Question: Do the people who go to Mexico receive free medical treatment along with a tax-payed for education to teach the Americans how to speak Spanish? Do they receive free higher education to help them get ahead? Do other immigrants in the US receive the same privileges that the Mexicans coming to the US expect the US to pay for from American tax dollars?

The day that the illegal immigrants rallied to show us what jobs they were doing is the day they should have been bussed back! Crossing illegally should mean you lose the ability to become an American, ever! If the babies were born in the US to give them some kind of status in the future, forget it! It was born from an illegal alien. The whole family needs to go back to their country of origin! The US should never reward illegals with the privilege of citizenship!

Mexicans do not have the right to enter the United States illegally. And the same is true for Americans in Mexico.

If Americans are moving to Mexico, maybe they will help to improve the economy. At least the Americans are giving some of the Mexicans jobs in their own country.

What has this to do with illegals coming into any country?

How does such address the real problems of those south of the United States border coming into this country illegally?

Face it - those that make the choice to live south of the America's border are not breaking the law and doing so illegally. A FAR DIFFERENT setting that what the United States is experiencing - an invasion of lawbreakers that have no interest at all with following immigration laws.

Face it - unlike the invaders of America that are breaking known immigration laws, these people are abiding by the law. There is no comparison between the groups.

I mean - are they forming gangs, bringing in all sorts of illegal activity? Causing a drain on the government by being a burden to hospitals? schools? any government assistance programs to aid in their welfare? protesting in the streets making demands that parts of that government give land to them?

MAJOR DIFFERENCE than what is happening within America.......

you should know that in Mexico the school its free for a elementary and high school the medical care are 100% cheapest than the American health the food and house bills are cheaper than in the states the university cost 20 dollars each semester in ipn and 0.002 dollar in the unam one of the 100 best universities in the world and we don't have to care about terrorist we aren't scared we are a peace full country and we don't complain about another races i can pay a university you can said the same.
