Moving to florida from the UK. Ineed a good web site with info on Visa's and details to go with any ideas ?

My partner (we are not married), and two kids wish to go to Florida forever. His sister is a American Citazen, but the VISA applications are just so complicated, anyone got any ideas of a good site, been trawling all morning, and its the same old stuff, Pay some solicitor!!! when Im sure I could manage myself If I could only find the info I need.

Well bad news. If your partner;s sister is American she can petition her sibling for a permanent residence visa (green card). That's a fourth preference category, meaning be prepared to wait 5 years or so for approval.

However, unless you are married you will not be able to get a visa to immigrate unless you have a highly in demand skill and can get an employer to sponsor you.

If you are married, once she has a visa she can petition you, but that will take quite a long time too, 2nd preference.

All of the information you need as well as all forms can be found on the US Embassy in London's website
http://www.usembassy.org.uk/cons_new/visa/iv/index.html

But I wouldn't even consider moving to Florida at this time without a job already lined up. Florida is one of the states that has been hardest hit by the recession, with unemployment rates currently at 9.4%, higher than the national average, and is expected to rise to 12%

The US is similar to the UK in many respects. However when it comes to immigration the US is more restrictive than the UK. For example if you are not married the US, unlike the UK, will not recognize your relationship. Furthermore unless your spouse is an American citizen and you do not have a job skill in demand by the US or is someone who is highly skilled (e.g. PhD in science or hold an engineering degree) most likely you will not be allowed entry. Since both of you are over 18 family relationship is irrelevant and the fact your partner's sister is an American citizen is irrelevant. Finally a solicitor cannot help you with American immigration law as they are not qualified to practice law in the US. The only thing you might be able to do is find a US attorney in London who advises UK citizens on US law. I suspect most of them work in commercial law for large international firms and do not practice US immigration law. My other advice would be to review the US State Department web site regarding visas and contact the US Embassy in London regarding the any questions you may have.
