Moving to the US from the UK?

Take no notice of what people here have said, most of it is really stupid, of course people have jobs here (rolls eyes) and "looking to" is commonly used by British people.

I have lived in the US in Texas for 6 years and I am British and ex-Army, I lived in Aldershot unsurprisingly before I came here!.Where are you living right now and what are you doing right now?

We do have economy problems as does the UK and some States are faring better than others. California is really rather unstable because of its plummeting property market , I would not pigeon hole yourself to one State and go somewhere warm , you don't leave the UK to be cold and stick to the sunbelt because its economically better because its house prices were not subject to the high elevation like California. IE The Southern States with the exception of Florida. Unemployment is hitting all states though, to varying degrees of severity. Some professions however are considered more recession proof than others and engineers are still in demand. I am a nurse ( yes, I was one of the grey mafia) and I still get a call a day from employers trawling for nurses. So, how the economy hits you depends a lot on what you do.

I married an American which is how I got here, although my nursing would have got me here more easily than any other profession, just a question of demand really. You do not say whether you intend to move here permanently or temporarily so I shall assume you are a looking for a greencard or an immigrant visa. To do this you need a bachelor degree or equivelant in your field of expertise and you need an American sponsor.The best way to start is on the internet, google companies in the US who you think would be interested in your type of engineering skills and start putting out letters and emails and if they want you they will sponsor you. If you do get a sponsor the process will take roughly a year.

Being ex military might be an advantage as many employers like the work ethic of those who have been in the forces but sometimes, though not always you can run into Americans thinking anything outside of their own country is third world! Its hilarious to us and you can usually interveiw your way out of that but it can happen.

A lot of places including the CIA will not employ you. You have to be born here, as does your spouse.You can't just come into the country. You will have to find an employer who will be willing to sponsor you. Otherwise you will have to try and get a visa under your own steam. Your best bet would be to look on US military job websites. They will probably say whether they are willing to sponsor you.

Sound like a good move, there should be some openings over there including the CIA.

I suggest you don't. Nobody here has a job. The unemployment is, like, 8% or something really disappointing. And since Obama wants to increase inflation like a madman, we're screwed. We were screwed with McCaine, too, who ONLY cared about the economy and not the people. I suggest you stay put for a while.

You cannot just up and move to the US. You need to get a job first, have your employer process your visa and then you can move.

"looking to move" ? hmmmm never in my life have I ever heard a Brit use those words.
