My best friend is mexican and he is trying to get his paperwork to become a citizen. what can he do?

ok so here's the story. my friend and his parents entered legally. they started all the paperwork in mexico and got permission to live in the U.S. and wait for the rest of the papers to become residents. well they never got a case number and the lawyer (in mexico) couldn't be found. they have lived here ever since. my friend was 3 when he came to the U.S. and is now about to turn 21. he did all his schools here and graduated from high school. he even enrolled in college and has a year under his belt. he had to drop out because he couldn't afford it. he would like to become a citizen so that he can go back to school and even get a job. does anyone know what he can do? and if you are going to say go back to mexico or something around those lines please don't even answer. thanks and i hope there is something that can be done.

i will ask him and get the details up asap. now another question is there any forms or anything that he should fill out for himself to see if he can become a resident? does the fact that he has been here for so long and done all the schooling in the us help his case? he also has his drivers license and has a clean record.

I'll put money, his parents told him that to make him feel better about the fact he is an illegal alien. If he wants to stay, he should go home and apply. This time, he should stay out of the country until he has approval to enter! His family should also return to their homeland!

Entered legally how? Tourist visa? diplomat? Does his parents have proof they entered legally? If they had an immigration visa was it real? His parents should have some paperwork concerning this! That's where you need to start.

Unanswered questions here. You state they entered legally and got permission to stay and wait for more papers. This does not sound right. What was their status at entry and what permission did they have to stay?
