My boyfriend is fighting for his citizenship, and he really needs my help, should i consider marriage?

Right now my boyfriend is going through it He thinks that his life is not going anywhere, because he doesn't have his citizenship. He has try ed all his options and he ended up with nothing. im thinking about considering marriage to help him get it, but i don't want him to think im trying to trap him, because im not. Should i talk to him about it, or will it affect our relationship?

Without considering his current immigration status, how authentic is the relationship? How long have you to been together? Do you love him and see yourself spending the rest of life with him? How does he feel about you as well? Do you honestly think he cares about you? Basically, what I'm getting at is if you are going to marry him, it shouldn't merely be to help him get his immigration status straight...rather a sincere marriage.

He must sort out his citizenship with his own means. Do you really want to be married to someone just to sort out the visa? Is that not completely shallow?
Boyfriends are for now, husbands are forever. Think carefully.

Has he really exhausted all of his visa options? I ask this because marriage, especially when it comes to Immigration, is SERIOUS business.

If you marry and then try to get a K-3 Spouse Visa, you will still need to find a way to keep him here, and the process takes longer than a K-1 Fiance Visa, which again, you'd need to find a way to keep him here - and even THEN, he'd have to return to his native country to attend the medical and consulate interview.

Petitioning for these visas is a financially, emotionally and mentally exhausting experience - you have to pay a $455 fee, gather evidence of a bonafide relationship, and show primary evidence of him having been in the States WITH you (not just of him having been in the States). USCIS is very keen on spotting Immigration fraud, so a K-1 or K-3 petition can be denied just as soon as it's been received.

This process, from filing to approval, can take anywhere from 6 months to longer. Then, once you're approved, the petition then moves to your boyfriend's embassy. He gets sent packets of forms, some that he must instantly return, then he has to spend MORE money on a medical examination and finally, the visa. If he passes the interview. This process, from approval to interview, can take at least two more months.

If he gets his K-1 Visa, only then can he re-enter the U.S., and you'll need to be married within 90 days from entry, or the visa becomes invalid. THEN you have to hurry and file for adjustment (green card) before he becomes out of status - this will (currently) cost you $1010. After that, he will get his green card, but THEN you have to file to remove the conditions on it. Citizenship doesn't even come into play until 3 concurrent years of bonafide marriage and living together in the States - and that's a whole other process.

What I'm saying is, it's a LONG, expensive process, and couples have to be strong in their relationship to ride it out. If he is eventually sent back to his native country, you can go with him and file the K-3 or another visa (CR-1/IR-1) together. Again, long and expensive.

I hope this information helps you make the best decision for you and your boyfriend. I sincerely wish you the best :-)

getting married to him for that reason is illegal you can get into alot of trouble if you do also ask yourself if it is something you would otherwise do?besides in these times is it really the right thing to bring somone into the country that will take a job from others struggling to feed their family.

Why does he want citizenship? Getting a permission to stay in the country is vital to even have your marriage accepted. Also, it takes longer to get the citizenship than just a couple of months!

Your marriage sounds fishy, I doubt the authorities will believe that it's genuine.. not having a citizenship doesn't mean you can't work, study..etc but being illegal is the problem.

It is called marriage fraud and is punishable by fines and jail time. If he is illegal, he must return to his own country and apply to come back legally. Getting married for citizenship is ridiculous.

LOVE
If he truly loves you and wants to make a life with you, then no problem. But remember that we are women and these men could talk us and make us believe in anything, so please be careful, he could get his green card and dump you to marry someone from his own country. If you love him and is a good person, then good luck!

If he has no status in US, being illegal, then marrying you won't get him legal either. You can petition him for spouse immigrant visa after get married. However, he still has to go back to his country to complete the process. If he has been in US illegally, there is very slim chance that he will get immigrant visa even if he goes through it. Most likely he will be banned entering to US for 10 years, if no lifetime ban.

what citizenship? nobody is taking it away from him? he can keep it, i sure do not want it.
if you are talking about US citizenship? it is not his,
what options has he ran out of ? are you talking about status in the US?
if you think you can help him by marrying him? it is your life,i thought marriage had different meanings that what you are talking about in your question,we must not have the same views on marriages.

Red Feather
It would be a mistake to marry any illegal. Marriage does not guarantee a green card, he may still be deported with a 10 year or lifetime ban, will you go with him or wait. Even when married he will still have to return to where he belongs to apply.
