It will all depend on whether he can pass the Australian character requirements and that will largely come down to how much gaol time he's done, and how long ago were his convictions. Everything is set out in the following fact sheet:

He will need to be completely honest in disclosing his record or he runs a very real risk of deportation and banning from entry to Australia. If his application is denied, there is an avenue for appeal but to have any chance of success there, he would need to show that he is a completely reformed character. |

Pretty negative answers. It really depends what kind of criminal charges, how long ago it was. He would have to be totally honest about his criminal charges. If no conviction was recorded, then he won't have too much problem. If a conviction was recorded, then he must be totally honest about all such charges when applying for permanent residence in Australia. That doesn't guarantee they will allow him. It really depends how long ago it happened. If long ago and no criminal activity since, he should be fine.
