My boyfriend wants to become a citizen of the USA?
Find answers to your legal question.

My boyfriend wants to become a citizen of the USA?

We have decided to get married and have been planning it for a while. Should he apply for citizenship before or after we are married?
Additional Details
Brian, when you say the rest of them, what them are you talking about? My boyfriend is Romanian and is here on a student visa, thank you very much.

You would only be wasting your money if you did file for citizenship before getting married because you need to proceed in the following manner (1) get married (2) file for your husband to adjust his status to become a permanent resident then in 3 years after the adjustment he can file for his citizenship. Actually he can begin that process in 2years and 9 months after his adjustment.

Yeah, and I want a billion dollars. Better check out the legal process first. If he is here illegally, he's not going to become a citizen just for marrying you. More likely, he may be deported, if here illegally. It takes years to go through the legal process. Better start down that path first.

Sorry, but a student visa does not convey citizenship any more than marrying a citizen while here on the visa. Nor does it provide many work provisions. My bet is he will have to go home and you will have to sponsor him.

before your boyfriend applies for citizenship? he needs to have a green card, papers need to be filed with USCIS.
he cannot apply right now.
citizenship is NOT given to anyone who wishes.
check USCIS site for details.

Not so fast...

Marry him and have him apply for his Resident Alien Card.

After 5 years of being:

a) still married to you (not divorced after 6 months...)
b) self supporting adult (has a job)
c) didn't get into any criminal trouble

he can apply for citizenship.
