He is Nicaraguan and was granted a type R class b1/b2 visa for one year with multiple entries. My question is once in the US, how long can he stay? For the duration of that year? We only plan on staying for two or three weeks in July, but I have heard that they sometimes limit the stay to 14 days. How does this work?

When he arrives at the airport, he will be given I-94 Departure/Arrival form. The duration of his stay is decided by immigration officer at the airport. He could get stamp of duration from 14 days, 1 months, or maximum up to 6 months. That is how long he can staty in US. |

The length of time you can stay in the U.S. is determined by the border officer when you arrive at a port-of-entry, NOT by the validity of the visa. A visa is merely a travel document which is presented when an alien applies for admission. The validity period of the visa has nothing to do with how long a person can stay. |
