Find answers to your legal question.

My grandpa lives here in the US but isn't a US citizen, he's 65 and does not speak a single word of english

he wants to be a citizen, he's lived here for about 5 or 7 years now, how long does he have to wait till he can become a US citizen, i know that if youve lived here for 5 yrs and if you can speak and write in english you can apply, but he can't speak nor write, im wondering if he is eligible to become a US citizen since he's 65

I think he's eligible (you'd have to check on the residency requirements). They do make exceptions for the elderly who do not speak english.

Go to the immigration and naturalization service web site.

Toe the line
My first question is he here legally?

If not - enter legally. Go thru the process like every other person that enters the country goes thru that are not law breakers and a drain on the taxpayers of this country.

Take the poor guy back to his homeland where he can understand what the heck is going on for once.

One Big Daddy
Obviously you have obtained stolen documents for him and have no respect for yourself or others for that matter. Do him a favor and send him home. Children and old ones are the first to go.

In general, applicants for naturalization must be permanent residents of the U.S. who have resided in the U.S. as greencard holders for a minimum of five years.

Those who are married to U.S. citizens or have served in the armed forces of the U.S. may, under certain conditions, qualify for naturalization after only three years of residency.

An applicant must be able to speak, read, write, and understand simple words and phrases in the English language. Some longtime, elderly permanent residents and applicants with certain disabilities are exempt from the English requirement.

Applicants are required to pass a short examination regarding the history and government of the U.S.

Did he come here legally (i.e., does he have a green card)? If not, he's here illegally. You are supposed to demonstrate some proficiency in the English language, but that can be waived for those who are illiterate. Question is, are you here legally? If so, you can probably sponsor him. If not...

Me
no he cannot. if hes lived here for 5-7 years, and hasnt started talking and writing in the language we speak here, he needs to get out!!!!!! i am okay w/ people who come in here from other countries, what i am not ok with is when people come in, don even attempt to speak our language, and think they have a right to our tax $.

His age will not get him any points. If he had wanted to be a citizen, he would have entered legally and have learned the language. Living here 7 years now and he has not made the effort to learn our language. He entered illegally when he was 58 years old. That is not considered elderly. That is a pitiful shame that he did not want to belong. Sorry for him in not showing any interest in our Country.

no,

Sorry, but he has to do it the RIGHT way by going back where he belongs first. I don't care that he's 65. He still an illegal alien CRIMINAL for being here illegally. He must learn English!

Hey, pro-illegals - this is a typical example of how the illegal aliens don't assimilate into the US and DON'T learn English.

infobrokernate
He needs to become a citizen just like everyone else. He can learn english, just like my grandfather when he came to this country.

Everyone else is crazy...but me!
Why, now? Did he suddenly hear of Social Security, or something?

lonewolf1
What type of documents does he have to be here??? Then I can answer your question????

When he cares enough about his adopted country to learn the language, he can become a citizen.

My grandma who's 68 years old learnt English and passed it. You can try to teach him, that's what I did with mine. The test is very easy.

He is here illegally. That means he's a criminal. Report him to ICE.

Mom madness
He can apply but to be a citizen he has to take a test on government. I dont think its too hard. He has to know basics, president, flag colors, etc. He should attend an english class to get a little bit

He needs to have a sponsorship by a family member who is a citizen and they can sponsor him to become a citizen. He will have to learn to speak basic English and will have to attend the courses.

If he is a U.S. resident then he should be able to apply for citizenship already.

nena_en_austin
If he is a Legal Resident for 5 years and living here in the States for that periodo of time and can prove it yes he can became a citizen even if he doesn't speak and write english is a deal about olde people that they don't have to is a age and I don't have the information in my hands but I have it somewhere is 62 or 65 I will get my tomorrow!! Yepeeee...

Its totally unreasonable to expect a 65yr old to learn another language. Particually when George Bush Jr can't speak it properly.

An example:

I know what I believe. I will continue to articulate what I believe and what I believe I believe what I believe is right.

being able to read, write, and speak in English is one of the requirements. personally, i think you should be able to speak Spanish. i don't see the big deal. you should probably get him some English classes though.
