I'm a U.S. citizen. I'm going to Korea from May 24th to July 29th. My passport expires on June 7th. I don't think I'll be able to get my new passport in time for my trip, so I was thinking I could leave the states after I apply for my new passport. Then, I could have my new passport mailed to me in Korea before I come back home so that I can re-enter the U.S. with my new passport.

Many countries do not allow if your passport expires with in three months of your entry date. Check with Korean embassy. I think, you can get a new passport on the same day at US consulate in Korea. |

Most countries will not let you in if you don't have enough time on your passport. Try getting the rush service on your passport |

You're not leaving until may 24th, you can still get a new passport. Mine only took 3-4 weeks and it wasn't even a renewal (it was my first) and it wasn't even expedited.
Besides, Korea might not let you in since your passport is expiring soon.

If I remembered correctly. Most country won't let you enter their country if your passport is expiring in 3 month or less. You may want to apply for a new passport now and have them mail them to you using the express system. |
