He didn't say he was going to mandate language study for Americans, only that he wanted to make it more available as it would be a worthy goal. His point was that the no child left behind criteria have dried up funding for many different courses of study that are also very valuable.

It's a good idea. In most Developed counties around the world children are taught more than one language.

Children would be taught at public schools, so Taxpayers would pay.

Well, in Canada, we all learn at least one second language. And we have free healthcare. It's probably because we're not spending trillions on bombing other countries.

I hate to break it to you, but multilinguistic education has been in the curriculum for quite some time now. Of course, once you reach eighth grade, you might find that out yourself...

Oh, and the same fund that pays for everything else education related - local taxpayers.

Think about it though, we live in a globalized world. Only knowing one language, with as many as there are, is a huge setback for someone. A disadvantage. A handicap, even.

The government wants a lot of things. Unfortunetly they are the most dysfunctional company in the US, and don't actually have the means to accomplish any goals. It'll be fun to see the results on the Daily Show here in a few years though.

Learning multiple languages is common practice in the rest of the world. It is a sign of intelligence. Why would you be resistant be becoming a more knowledgeable person?

All colleges require a foreign language now. Since it is easier to learn things while young, why not teach it our young? That's the best solution.

I think he meant it to be a choice. He wont make us be bilingual by force.

But if you're smart, you might want to learn a second language, it gives you more opportunities when it comes to finding a good job.

Why is it a bad thing to want children to know languages?
I think it's great! You'll be able to visit other countries and communicate with people! It doesn't HAVE to be Spanish - maybe you want to be fluent in French, Italian, Russian, whatever - why not learn the language young, when it's easy?

I would love to be bilingual, and I wish I had continued at my Elementary School - before I moved we had French and Spanish class in Kindergarten through Fifth grade.

I really think that been able to speak more than one language is a huge advantage over people that only speak one. I was bless with the chance of been able to speak three languages Spanish, Italian, and English. And when I was back in California I really noticed how much employers like to hire people that have that kind of ability over the other people that only speak one. I have two kids and both speak English and Spanish and in the future I think is a great Idea if they would learn Chinese because from the looks of it pretty soon we are going to be required here in the US to be able to speak. China looks like is going to be one of the mayor importers of this country and who knows probably in the next few years we are probably going to have to deal with them in a daily basis. I say this because I lived in California for 17 years and before I moved I noticed that 6 out of 10 business owners where Asian. They are with out doubt taking over, slowly but surely!!

That's the best thing I've heard about him yet. I think that is wonderful, considering that my children's foreign language program was cut to spend more on the children of 'immigrants'. I don't plan to vote for him or anyone that would give anything close to amnesty, but it is encouraging that he is thinking of our children instead of just theirs. Who will pay? The same people that are paying for the children of illegals. At least it will be money well spent. And if it costs too much to take care of ourselves and illegals, then guess who should be cut off?

I do object to the new definition of bilingual in the US. It used to mean speaking any two languages, but now it only means Spanish and English. Regardless, my children are entitled to at least the same opportunities as the children of illegals. Whatever they are.

It's a great idea!!! The more our children learn, the better off they will be! And your question says bilingual...that doesn't mean the other langue has to be Spanish for all those who are assuming that. The "not just Hispanics" part is a little racist.

That's the beauty of his plan is that no one will have to pay. It's free to teach multiple languages, it'll be free health care, free ponies, free castles, free beer what ever you want it's free!

I think it's a good idea. We should be able to speak another language. I studied Spanish and French. I started learning Italian on my own. I met someone who is fluent in French because at his public school, you could choose either spanish or french in addition to English of course. This is in the U.S. I don't think it's a super rich town.

edit: It's much easier and faster to learn a language if you are immersed in it. Education has the ability to change lives for the positive. We need more of it. Everyone pays. We all benefit.

Well I guess the ****** is doing something right. Most in Europe speaks more than 2 languages. I like him more than hillary, but I'm republican (I don't like Mccain)

We are just conforming to outside sources such as illegals.It should be the opposite way around. If him or her are elected America will be no more.
