Obtaining Italian Citizenship?

My Maternal Great Grandparents were born in Italy and moved to the U.S. and were never naturalized my Grandmother and Grandfather were both Italians born in the U.S. and my mother married my father a Russian whos Grandparents moved to the U.S.

I think I am able to obtain Citizenship if I have every Birth, Marriage, and Death record on my mothers side and just my fathers records.

How am I to go about doing this and is it possible if they may be lost somewhere?

Check with the italian embassy/consulate, but I believe you have to be italian on your father's side in order for your great-grandparents citizenship to be recognized

"Your paternal or maternal grandfather was born in your native country, your paternal great grandfather was an Italian citizen at the time of his birth, neither you nor your father nor your grandfather ever renounced your right to Italian citizenship"

There is nothing about granting citizenship through a maternal great grandfather.
