I am a Pakistani student doing a PhD in UK (been here for two and a half years already and have one more year to go). I am planning to get married later this year with my girlfriend who is a British national (her parents are of Pakistani origin as well). We are planning to get married in Pakistan since we have most of our relatives living there, but planning to settle in the UK. I am not sure if applying for a "certificate of approval" is applicable to me or not since we are getting married outside UK? Also I am doing a part-time job as a student right now. If we show our funds together (I and my girlfriend), and apply for a marriage visa, how should we proceed with the application. I would be thankful for any help.

If you are getting married in Pakistan then you do not require COA, but keep in mind that u cannot apply for adjustment of status in UK then. You need to apply for settlement visa back in Pakistan in UK High Commission. Otherwise, you can get married in Pakistan, then apply for COA in UK & register ur marriage in UK under English law as well & then apply for adjustment of status from Student to spouse of British Citizen.
