I agree. Why should we accommodate to their needs instead of the other way around? I mean, they are ILLEGAL and they demand so much. I am sick of them. I was a legal immigrant myself who stood in line to become a citizen. My family learned English right away since we wanted to succeed and prosper. My friend who was an elementary school teacher in L.A. was forced to learn Spanish to accommodate her Spanish-speaking parents and student. Give me a break. They should learn English.

English needs to become our official language!

In many other countries, you are treated unequally and frowned upon if you do not have a working knowledge of that country's language, enough to get you through the work day and communicate effectively without a translator, your wants and needs. In America, we have decided that you can do wahtever the hell you want and someone will come up with a government subsidized program for more and more people to rip us off, take their money, ship it to their own countries and leave us high and dry all the while not even ATTEMPTING to communicate in our native language. I am sick of spending precious resource dollars to hire and retain translators just in order to communicate with patients and their health care needs and concerns and you can bet your sweet behind they will learn English as far as how to contact a lawyer to sue if you get their confusing and often lame attempt to communicate their needs confused in any way. It's a no win situation when they are talking about (or have already done?) having the American citizenship test translated into all these different languages. WOW really, don't you think that the American citizenship test should be in English/American and that if you can't read it or understand it, you dont get to take the test?

The bilingual requirement is another way of hiring illegals who speak English. They aren't looking for Americans who can speak Spanish.

I know what you mean. I have been excluded from a job based on the fact that I could not speak Spanish. I refuse to have to learn another language just to get a job in my own country. I feel it is discrimination. People need to learn English if they want to live in this country. If I move to Mexico then I will learn Spanish.

I see that in Orange County as well. The job ads say "must be bilingual." We shouldn't have to change to accommodate a foreigner!

I'm sick and tired of having to bend over backwards for people who don't want to learn English. Why are we always the ones having to make the sacrifices? We're giving theses illegals our country piece by piece. I absolutely refuse to learn THEIR language. They need to learn OUR language!!

Part of the problem is we are not an English speaking country - not officially. I used to live in Miami so I understand what you went through . . . Hopefully you have moved and are employed.

Problem is that immigrants are given grants, loans, mortgage, etc. since they have no credit score. Larger companies know they are mostly ignorant and uneducated, so when they have a rough time taking your, money they focus on a bilingual person who can take their money on either language. I know, I worked in one.

anon is partly right, hence immigrants must learns English to apply for a job (they have to anyways to survive in the USA) they know Spanish by default.

If you refuse than you are doing yourself harm. Regardless of what you think, business is business, they have to cater to their target customers and if you don't meet their standards you lose. I have job where I don't need to be bilingual (even though I am)..but hey, get in where you fit in I guess. Again, remember this isn't about politics it's about business...now if they were giving a job to illegal immigrant..than that would be a different story, but this isn't that. BTW, you ARE in San Diego, which means they probably do over the border jobs as well...so maybe your just reading this WAY off...

One thing you did not disclose, what kind of work were you looking for?
If for instance it is in retail industry, it would make sens that you'd be required additional language(s). A lot of Mexicans come to spend their money in stores ans restaurants in San Diego..

It's always good to know a second language. You don't have to, but these days it's almost required to speak Spanish to get a job. People make a lot more money being bilingual. So I don't have a problem with it.

Why refuse? Would it harm you to get educated? Sure you don't HAVE to. But, why skate by with the bare minimum? Maybe they didn't hire you because you're lazy.
