Protecting my US residency while working in Canada?

I am a Canadian Citizen who has been working and living in the US now under a Green Card status. I haven't had much luck in finding a suitable job in the US now for a year. I have received potential interest in a full-time job opportunity with a Foreign Company operating in Canada. How can I protect my green card status if I choose to take the job in Canada ? What should I do and how should I prepare myself ?

File for a reentry permit BEFORE leaving the United States. It will allow you to live in Canada for up to two years without losing your Green Card. Also..... maintain a US residence (apartment lease in your name or home mortgage in your name), utilities in your name (power, water, sewer), auto registered in your name, bank account in your name with regular deposits and withdrawals and the MOST IMPORTANT ... File your Federal and State Income Taxes each year.
US Law requires you to file taxes on all your income, from all over the world, each year. You will be allowed to take a credit for foreign taxes paid, but you MUST file.
If you take these actions you'll be okay. |

you cant. thats simple.
2 years at most and ONLY if the US govt approves. And I do not think they will approve an extension of their green card while you are looking for a job in another country. and you do have to state WHY you want the extension.
If they dont approve, then you have 12 months max.
And yes you must maintain a presence in Usa if you wish to keep your green card - pay your rent, pay your bills and pay the mortgage as well as living in Canada - that is a lot of money. I dont think that will be possible.
Dont expect things to get any better here or there,
Things are getting worse here in Canada as well.

You must return to the U.S. before 5 months are up. You must spend a greater part of your time in the U.S. like six or seven months. If you spend more time in Canada you will have to renew your visa. |
