I lived in the US for over 10 years and have a US green card, but returned to the UK last year. I have been in the UK for 1 year now so am I correct that my green card has automatically expired or do I need to file form I-407? **please note that I do not want to have the green card anymore**
Also if I file I-407 form do I just give up my green card or do I also give
up my SSN ? I ask this since I still have bank accounts, 401K and investment accounts in the US and would like to understand if there would be any impact on filing I-407? If I do file a I-407 form what other procedures do I need to do (if any)? Is there any other procedures that I need to do for the next few years following abandoning my green card ?
Finally, if I wish to visit the US in the future would I do it via the visa waver program, just like any other tourist ?

You should file form I-407 as quickly as possible. As long as you have resident status, you are subject to income taxes in the U.S. on your world-wide earnings. Turning in your green card will end any tax obligations you may have.
You will not lose your Social Security number. You obtained it lawfully, and it is yours forever.
When you come to the U.S., you can use the VWP if the purpose of your trip is to visit for 90 days or less as a visitor for business or pleasure.
When you file form I-407, ask for a photocopy. |
