Question about nationality law (American moving to the Netherlands)?

I am an American citizen considering moving to the Netherlands, and I was wondering that if I apply for Dutch citizenship, can I still keep my American citizenship? (The consulate was very little help, they told me to go to a website [www.ind.nl , there's an English version if you look at the top].)
The website was not much help either, it has a statement which says:
Once you have been granted Dutch nationality, you will not automatically lose your American nationality. However, it is possible to give up your nationality. In principle you will be required to give up your original nationality, but there are a number of exceptions to this rule (see Exceptions).

I didn't follow this, does this mean yes or no? I read the Dutch version, and it was not much more specific.
So, has anyone had experience in this area?
I am not married, was not born in the Netherlands, and have no family or historical ties to the country whatsoever.

If after 5 years living legally in the Netherlands, you apply to be naturalised as Dutch, you will need to give up US citizenship (the US does not recognise that you have done so unless you formally renounce it).
As stated at http://www.ind.nl/EN/verblijfwijzer/verblijfwijzer_mijnsituatie.asp?proc=komen&procedure=Obtaining%20Dutch%20nationality&procedurestapnaam=Conditions%20in%20respect%20of%20Naturalisation&land=&duur=1&lang=en , you will be required to renounce US citizenship after becoming Dutch. As it also says and you have found, there are exceptions and those are listed at http://www.ind.nl/EN/verblijfwijzer/verblijfwijzer_mijnsituatie.asp?proc=komen&procedure=Obtaining%20Dutch%20nationality&procedurestapnaam=Exceptions&land=&duur=1&lang=en .
The only one of these that I can imagine applying to an American is if you are married to a Dutch citizen. |

you cannot apply for citizenship in the Netherland without having lived there legally for at least 3 years (e.g. if married to citizen) or 5 years. Your first step is to see whether you can get a legal work visa for the Netherlands. Depending on your qualifications you could have already not manage to do that. Worry about citizenship once you actually live legally in the Netherlands. |
