Don't know if he was a racist or not though his speech did stir up lots of bad feeling. However I don't think he was a realist at all, if he was a realist he would have been working with globalisation, with all its problems and benefits. To be fair the rivers of blood speech used very emotive language, politics shouldn't be like that you know, it's manipulation. Having real solutions to the problems of everyday living is more important.

powell was an exceptionally articulate and profoundly intellectual man, his speech was about unchecked immigration and in some respect he was spot on - although his symbolism was hugely over the top. As for using the speech to illicit propoganda against the race relations act then yes, he was indeed a bigot.

EP was a mix of both. People today who were not even born back then, don't really have a true grasp of the situation.

Enoch Powell was a former British Army Officer, a Brigadier, equal in rank to a one star US Army General. He had seen the worst aspects of what war is like.

He was a lifelong supporter and member of the Conservative and Unionist Party [a true Blue Tory]. He believed in the freedom of the individual and less government etc. He also hated slavery of any kind and like Wm. Wilberforce before him [another Tory] he would do anything, including going to war to stop it. He had done exactly that in WW2

Here in UK after WW2 we were having serious problems. We had created the world's first ever welfare state. Both Labour and the Real Tory party supported this idea.

As time passed, Enoch went into denyal - he did not want the truth known that the NHS was surviving in the 1950s and 1960s due to the good grace of hundreds of Indian doctors who had left India [Socialist India] to help us keep going in the NHS.

Enoch became obsessed with the race issue and was fearful that a white majority might rise up and cause serious difficulties. In this respect he was giving the nation a warning of what would happen if the people allowed racism to conquer their minds.

That is the message I thought he was putting out until we got the River's of Blood Speech. I'm sorry to say that this painted a picture of a blood soaked Britain on her knees battling against endless armies of Black folk. It was just too much and too far out - the Tories were enraged by it and kicked him out of the party.

Enoch's predictions have not come to pass, however, we now have the very serious problem of Muslims in our midst who hate us to the point they're willing and able to kill us.

I don't want to say too much about the present situation except to say that the people the Muslims do not ever want to enrage, are the combined barbarian tribes of Britain, the Anglo Saxons and their allies the Celts of Breten and Eire.

It could come to that and I think politicians know it. They're just going to have to cool their PC ardour for the time being and allow criminal Muzo killers to be locked up for life. It's gotta happen, or soon, the folk of Breten will take matters into their own hands.

The next general election in couple of years time might show some real surprises and scare the political estabishment half to death. It could happen. It's up to them to get on the case and stop judges handing down light sentences for even gobshite Musos who threaten us. Those guys who downloaded the bomb info from the Internet. That's not a crime, what the hell were they doing in court? Meanwhile the real villains are still out there plotting our murders.

Remember, in our democracy it is the duty of an opposition to plot the downfall of the UK.gov - this however must be done by political means. Looking at bomb making plans on the Internet is gonna get folk locked up. Just don't do it. Try something else. How about a Down with Brown demo? Might actually get a lot more support than you think. Even, I suspect, from members of his own party.

The problem with many muzos is that they're just too intense. People are now starting to laff at them. Wake up, get real. If you've got something to say let's hear it. And, please, no more moralising about women walking about half dresssed. This UKAY just get used to it. When muzzos come on like that they just sound so depressing and silly.

We are all the same race - human. We need to understand that this is the only world we have, we have to share it with one another. There is only a limited supply of everything. All people should be treated with respect, kindness and understanding. Except racists like Powell who have a lot to answer for with ugly minds making ugly comments.

The rivers of blood have not happened- yet- unless you count the european-born muslim fanatics who seem to be more fanatical than any taliban.

No, I do not think he was a racist. He was an intelligent, highly educated man who never once promoted the notion of one race being superior to another. But neither was he the insightful prophet that the right have made him out to be. He saw dangers in the assimilation of large numbers of immigrants. In that he was wrong, for it must be recognised the the overwhelming majority of the immigrant generation he was talking about have become valuable members of British society. The challenges and threats we are facing now in the 21st century are not the ones he identified!

and like it not they are mostly done by Black youths,
if it was white on black it would cause a riot,
the black on white attacks are suppressed, so as not to provoke a response. the Steven Lawrence stabbing being a prime example, making him out to be an angle,that the locale's say he wasn't.

he put England first, I put England first Scotland ,Ireland ,Wales a close second and so on, doe's that make me a racist ? I think not.

Do not the Muslims that you mention pose the same threat that EP was referring to,do you not see what has happened to this country, has the influx of immigrants since the 60's not change this country to the point of collapse, our infrastructure is on its knees, Rivers of blood may have been a figure of speech that people will bend to their own cause,
but you say enough to establish that you are not ignorant to the fact that if something had been done back then ,we would not be facing this threat of the destruction of this great country,
are you English do you live in a city faced with violence daily ?

Enoch Powell has to be one of the most intelligent, knowledgeable and enlightened politicians of the 20th Century. A true patriot and one who served the public of the UK with total commitment.

People really should stop confusion patriotism with racism !

Yes - there are a lot of racists in the UK (as there are in every country on the planet), but despite the constant "smearing" by the PC "Do-Gooder" Brigade, Enoch Powell was never one of them !!

If people want to publicly "brand" people as being racist, they really should learn the true meaning of the word and do their homework a little more carefully !!

I did not agree with Enoch Powell, back in the 60's, I actually thought immigration, after the war, was beneficial to Britain, as the Irish, Jamaican's, and Indians, helped re-build our Country. However, the state of the Country now, due to the influx of hundred's of thousands of assylum seekers, illegals, and mass immigration, is crucifying our Country, and I have NEVER felt so frightened for the future of Britain, and our culture, and I think old Enoch must have had a premenition of what was to come. I bet he's looking down, and saying "I told you so"!!!!

It is a complete misunderstanding of history, politics and Enoch Powell to suggest he was a racist. His concern, a proven one to his credit is that Britain would lose it's identity by allowing an unmeasured and uncontrolled influx of commonwealth population into this country. His concerns have been realised and the generation that fought for our freedom as a nation during the great war and WW11 turn in their graves at what has become of their sacrifice to this once great country.

Sure I've read the speech DaveH and long before you posted your link. It's blatantly racist. Did you miss where Powell says, "When she goes to the shops, she is followed by children, charming, wide-grinning piccaninnies."? And all those people who reference, channel or make a nod to Powell are racists too, people like Nigel Hastilow and Boris Johnson.
