My in laws (green card/permanent residents) have been out of the US for 20 months. They are supposed to come back to the US next week. I just found out about the permanent resident requirement that they must come every year. Will they be turned away at the airport? Do they really have to get a re-entry permit before coming?

They had planned on returning sooner, but we moved and thought it best to wait until we were settled.
And yep, *I* just found out -- hasn't been my job to deal with the IL's immigration...

Good freaking luck with THAT. A "green card" is the permission to live and work in the US. If you live and work elsewhere, you are considered to have abandoned this privilege. Found out just now? Too bad, should have checked before.

No, it's not that they must "come" every year. They are actually EXPECTED to live in the United States.... hence the term "Permanent Resident."
They could be admitted with a warning or the cards could be confiscated and they would be allowed to enter with instructions to report to the USCIS where they would have to PROVE they are actually residents of the United States.
***********If they are lucky enough to be admitted (my guess is that they'll just get a warning) they need to both file I-131's and get them approved BEFORE they leave the United States to go overseas. They need to file at least 90 to 120 days BEFORE leaving.
By filing I-131's they can stay outside the USA for up to 24 months with no problems coming back.
