I agree that anyone who wants a better opportunity should be able to come to the US. However, it should be done legally like it has been in previous generations. Also, they should learn to assimilate into our culture, not expect us to accomodate theirs (press 2 for Spanish, etc.).

The illegal immigration of millions of un-educated, illiterate, un-skilled people is bad for American citizens.
So what if our lawns are not mowed, or we have to pay 17 cents more for a head of lettuce?

if people don't have the resources or the patience to become a legal citizen, they should go back where they came from.

I don't have a problem with immigrants becoming legalized citizens, I do have a problem with illegals that sneak over hear and drain our resources.

There is a lady who is taking "refuge" in a Chicago church right now, she has been there since August '06. they were threatening to send her home and seperate her from her 6 year old son who was born here.

At first, I felt for her because I figured that she was trying to become a legal citizen and had a son waiting through the process (I am aware that it can take a long time, even for those with money).

Come to find out, this chick had already been deported back to Mexico T W I C E, and she snuck back over here and had a kid. They need to ship her back to Mexico. I have no sympathy for her now.

America should welcome legal immigrants with open arms, and kick illegals out.

I also think there's a lot of racism involved as well. Why are mexicans allowed to sneak over here, but if they are haitian or cuban (or any other nationality of black heritage) they are shipped back just as quickly as they come here? something isn't right about that.

No amnesty! Right now, there are many people on a waiting list to get into the US legally. But we are rewarding the border runners with citizenship. Or before citizenship, at least all the rights and freedoms we have. Free medical, etc. The people on the list should be let in using a quick but systematic approach.

How can the government pardon so many criminals ? The laws have been on the books for years. Use some of the 2.5 trillion this proposal is going to cost US the AMERICAN taxpayer, and ENFORCE the law as it is written. This is a repeat of the 1988 proposal..it didn't work then, and it won't work now. LISTEN TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ! ARE WE NOT SHOUTING/ SCREAMING LOUD ENOUGH FOR YOU TO HEAR US in Washington ? They have asked the people of the Untied States for suggestions to the immigration problem. Well here is my suggestion...

Mexico has a single, streamlined law that ensures that foreign visitors and immigrants are:
# in the country legally;
# have the means to sustain themselves economically;
# not destined to be burdens on society;
# of economic and social benefit to society;
# of good character and have no criminal records; and
# contributors to the general well-being of the nation.

The law also ensures that:
# immigration authorities have a record of each foreign visitor;
# foreign visitors do not violate their visa status;
# foreign visitors are banned from interfering in the country's internal politics;
# foreign visitors who enter under false pretenses are imprisoned or deported;
# foreign visitors violating the terms of their entry are imprisoned or deported;
# those who aid in illegal immigration will be sent to prison.

Who could disagree with such a law? It makes perfect sense. The Mexican constitution strictly defines the rights of citizens -- and the denial of many fundamental rights to non-citizens, illegal and legal. Under the constitution, the Ley General de Poblacion, or General Law on Population, spells out specifically the country's immigration policy.

It is an interesting law -- and one that should cause us all to ask, Why is our great southern neighbor pushing us to water down our own immigration laws and policies, when its own immigration restrictions are the toughest on the continent? If a felony is a crime punishable by more than one year in prison, then Mexican law makes it a felony to be an illegal alien in Mexico.

If the United States adopted such statutes, Mexico no doubt would denounce it as a manifestation of American racism and bigotry.

We looked at the immigration provisions of the Mexican constitution. [1] Now let's look at Mexico's main immigration law.

Mexico welcomes only foreigners who will be useful to Mexican society:
# Foreigners are admitted into Mexico "according to their possibilities of contributing to national progress." (Article 32)
# Immigration officials must "ensure" that "immigrants will be useful elements for the country and that they have the necessary funds for their sustenance" and for their dependents. (Article 34)
# Foreigners may be barred from the country if their presence upsets "the equilibrium of the national demographics," when foreigners are deemed detrimental to "economic or national interests," when they do not behave like good citizens in their own country, when they have broken Mexican laws, and when "they are not found to be physically or mentally healthy." (Article 37)
# The Secretary of Governance may "suspend or prohibit the admission of foreigners when he determines it to be in the national interest." (Article 38)

Mexican authorities must keep track of every single person in the country:
# Federal, local and municipal police must cooperate with federal immigration authorities upon request, i.e., to assist in the arrests of illegal immigrants. (Article 73)
# A National Population Registry keeps track of "every single individual who comprises the population of the country," and verifies each individual's identity. (Articles 85 and 86)
# A national Catalog of Foreigners tracks foreign tourists and immigrants (Article 87), and assigns each individual with a unique tracking number (Article 91).

Foreigners with fake papers, or who enter the country under false pretenses, may be imprisoned:
# Foreigners with fake immigration papers may be fined or imprisoned. (Article 116)
# Foreigners who sign government documents "with a signature that is false or different from that which he normally uses" are subject to fine and imprisonment. (Article 116)

Foreigners who fail to obey the rules will be fined, deported, and/or imprisoned as felons:
# Foreigners who fail to obey a deportation order are to be punished. (Article 117)
# Foreigners who are deported from Mexico and attempt to re-enter the country without authorization can be imprisoned for up to 10 years. (Article 118)
# Foreigners who violate the terms of their visa may be sentenced to up to six years in prison (Articles 119, 120 and 121). Foreigners who misrepresent the terms of their visa while in Mexico -- such as working with out a permit -- can also be imprisoned.

Under Mexican law, illegal immigration is a felony. The General Law on Population says,
# "A penalty of up to two years in prison and a fine of three hundred to five thousand pesos will be imposed on the foreigner who enters the country illegally." (Article 123)
# Foreigners with legal immigration problems may be deported from Mexico instead of being imprisoned. (Article 125)
# Foreigners who "attempt against national sovereignty or security" will be deported. (Article 126)

Mexicans who help illegal aliens enter the country are themselves considered criminals under the law:
# A Mexican who marries a foreigner with the sole objective of helping the foreigner live in the country is subject to up to five years in prison. (Article 127)
# Shipping and airline companies that bring undocumented foreigners into Mexico will be fined. (Article 132)

All of the above runs contrary to what Mexican leaders are demanding of the United States. The stark contrast between Mexico's immigration practices versus its American immigration preachings is telling. It gives a clear picture of the Mexican government's agenda: to have a one-way immigration relationship with the United States.

Let's call Mexico's bluff on its unwarranted interference in U.S. immigration policy. Let's propose, just to make a point, that the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) member nations, and the United States Government, standardize their immigration laws by using Mexico's own law as a model.

I believe you are referring to illegal aliens when you use the term "immigration issue". I point this out because it seems people have forgotten that there is a lot of difference between an immigrant and an illegal alien. More accurately, the media trying to be ever so politically correct does not like the term. An immigrant goes through the proper process to become a legal citizen, is gainfully employed and pays taxes the same as every other citizen.
An illegal alien on the other hand, pays no taxes yet uses more of the the public services that are funded by taxes by requiring additional classes for their children because they don't speak the language of the country they live in, requiring more social services and the like. Additionally, since they don't pay taxes, they also don't have any insurance so must go to the emergency room and get the most expensive medical care money can buy which they also don't have to pay for. People, I cannot begin to tell you how much it costs us as a nation to have these people here. I will not accept the statement that we could not afford our own produce without them either. We would all have a lot more money if we didn't have to support them with our tax dollars and higher insurance and medical costs. We could then choose whether we want to spend it on produce. The operative word being "choose". The choice has been taken from us. Furthermore, I belive that one of 2 things would happen if this source of cheap labor were removed. 1. The forces of the free market would prevail and people would simply not pay for products that are too costly once their prices are not artificially kept down. 2. Once producers feel some pain, they would figure out how to produce their crops profitably without illegal labor. It is a well known fact that innovation does not occur unless someone feels some pain or sees some reason to make a change.
I would also like to state that I don't feel any new immigration laws are needed save one change. The one change I would make is to specify that a child born in this contry to illegal aliens is also an illegal alien and can be deported with it's parents. This would discourage people from trying to slip into th ecountry and have a child so it will be a citizen. What is needed is enforcement of the laws that we already have. The borders need to be secured and those people who are in this country illegally need to be removed. That's the bottom line.

I don't mind immigration. You can't blame someone for trying to better thier living experience for not only themselves, but for thier families as well. The USA is the greatest place to live so why would'nt someone want to live here?

What I cannot stand is that people come over here without knowledge of the English language and expect people to stop and try to listen to what they have to say. Sorry buddy, but if I can't understand you, too bad. English is the main language in America, so I think that in order to be granted citizenship, you should have to know English. It's that simple. Immigrants learning English would save everyone that is already in this country alot of headaches and it would make it easier for themselves.

If I lived in Mexico or Honduras, I'd want to make a living that would relieve my family of the burdens of poverty. I'd come to the United States -- whether they wanted me here or not.

And, you know, so would you.

The point I'm trying to make is that this is a very complicated issue and it deserves much more thinking than it takes to come up with the conclusions that could fit on a bumper sticker.

I'm also aware that native-born Americans are not being hired by companies who know they can hire illegals at a much lower wage. And that's wrong.

These are just two complexities of the many that have to be taken into account in coming up with a position.
