lol i thought it was official language. i am sure bush and his government takes care of their business in ENGLISH. correct me if i am wrong but official means it is used in government or legal. official means the same way it is used in goverenmen. But far as what you are talking bout i say you are right. if we all are in USA and we all should understand english we dont have to go through any other language option. They shouldnt even teach other languanges in high schools not required. |

Yes English should be the official language in the United States. Immigrants should have to know English before coming over here. |

Yes! My grand parents came to this country threw Ellis Island and they learned English and they took the test & became American's. and they were very proud to say we are Americans! They had very thick French accents. They became very patirotic and voted and instilled in us that we must vote. The languge of this great country is English and all peoples that have come here in years gone by have learned English! They left Belgium because of a country divided into two languges so Yes English for everyone. |

Every other country on this planet, that I know of, has an official language. So why can't we? We have so many wussies' running things and worrying about hurting someones feelings, its unbelievable. Grow a back bone. If we didn't have so many nukes I doubt we would have a country. |

i think that anyone who is trying to become an american citizen should have to take a test to see if they can learn the english language.i dont care if the are hispanic, japs, russian,or whatever.so i think that to answer ur question is yes............but not because u told or asked me to say yes |
|

El Oso
|
My answer is yes, provided we do not cross the line betwen being patriotic and having common sense to becoming big embassadors of biggotry,Saying yes to this question is not to say that we should not embrace immigrants and that they should be proud of their background and speak whatever language they chose at home.... |

Of course it should be,85% of all Americans speak English as their first language. All our government laws and regulations are in English. Our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution are all written in English.Tho the USA doesn't have an official language ,it is recognized all over the world as an English speaking nation.
28 states have designated English as that states official language. |

Well, considering that is has been spoken by the majority of the American people since ever, it would make sense.
And to those pansies that can't pick it up. My great grandfather came from Germany without a word of English and guess what? It didn't take him more than 6 months to be fluent enough to own his own property and business. The language hasn't gotten that much harder in the last 100 years, so I guess unless you are a retard that means that you should be able to pick it up in 6 months.
The more this country bends to accomodate, the more they will take. Do people want to learn a new language? No, it's difficult. But if you want to live here, you need to play by the club rules. |

No. Of course.
It will be the dominant language of the United States regardless.
And everyone who wishes to advance in the USA will speak "American" English. As they always have.
Unlike Europe with it's cultures and linguistic tribes which they protect. There is no need here.
Americans have practically made English the world's international language. So stupid that we can be so paranoid about it here at home. |

How would making it official change anything? Who made it unofficial? Ok I just made it official, there you happy? |

Sure in countries that speak mostly English.
and by the way by saying say yes, its more of a forced answer. and if we know the answer you want we're more likely to give it to you for a shot at the best answer. just a tip, don't write the answer you want in your subject if you really want people's opinions |

There is not a language police yet in the US. English is the number one read and spoken language in the world, not by population...business, science, medical research, depend on it to communicate with those from other countries. No such mandate is needed. |

No the United States is not like any other country,we're here to live in the Land of The Free, not the Land of English Speaking. There's no official speaking language in the United States and I'm 100% percent with that.My mother is from Mexico and she doesn't speak a word of English, and I'm not and nobody's going to change her culture and language in order to "fit in" in the United States.I have respect for all immigrants from other countries too,and respect and appreciate their culture, that's all that should matter, that we unite and respect our decision to speak a language we feel most comfortable communicating in.Just because I'm speaking spanish to my mom in a shopping line, doesn't mean I'm speaking profane or inappropriate towards any customer near us,I'm simply saying:Mami, agarrartes todas las ingredientes para el menudo?
Mom,did you pick up all the ingredients for the menudo. |

since America is the land of opportunity and 95% of the citizens are American then yes it should be the official language. but also we do need to teach the immigrants to speak the language before becoming citizens |

YES YES YES YES. English ONLY. English is the official language in some states already. It needs to become a federal law so that we can save millions that we spend on printing everything in multiple languages. That will also cut out the requirement of having to speak spanish as well as English to get a job in this country. |
|

It is the official language for drafting laws. Beyond that, does it really matter? In California the official language is English and see how much that gets you in real life.
Yeah, sure, the official language should be English. But why bother if it alienates people?
It doesn't buy much. |
