Yes, if you're good enough to die for a country, you're good enough to live in it.
That includes all Indian, Nepalese, Polish, Canadian, African and Caribbean nationals who fought at various times in their own regiments in the British army or simply under a British flag.
If a country considers people not good enough to live in their nation, then enlist exclusively your own sons and daughters to die in your wars. |

without doubt! i can't believe the government is contesting this! Gurkhas have served our country with distinction, they should be allowed to live here without resrictions of an immigrant for sure! |

(USA) it used to be that foreign nationals who put in 6 years with the military were qualified for citizenship
it was called the "Lodge Act" and i served with many "old timers" who were veterans of WWII countries other than US, esp east europe
refugees poland, estonia, germany etc; one of my instructors had been in the danish underground as a teenager |

Yes, my grandad for example was an indian soldier that helped the UK in WW2.
At least they made a contribution to this country, if they are willing to give up their lives for a country they were not born in I think this surely qualifies for British citizenship.
Instead the Government are opening the doors to those that live off our taxes, those that can't speak even one word of English and are for some reason giving them houses worth £1 million, I still can't believe that story. |

What the heck were they fighting for in the first place? |

Yes - if they were good enough to fight and die for our country, they are good enough to live here! Especially as the government, whilst quibbling over a few thousand Gurkhas, are holding the door open to tens of thousands who have no historic or cultural connection with the UK at all! |

simple answer.
yes. |

Absolutely, of all the immigrants this country takes in people like the Ghurkhas have earned the right to live here the most.
It's disgraceful that in a time when the government pipes on about racism that it is refusing to let a certain ethnic group of the armed forces have equal rights. |

I must say, I know very little about questions like that, and the proof is, I just deleted an answer on illegal immigration. So, I'm not an expert. But...
Let's see this from two angles, ok? One, I think you'll agree with me, that offering your life for your country (by birth or adoption) should be considered exceptionally meritory, if not, the question ends here.
Now, if you do it because this (whatever "this" means) is the land you live in, with your family and friends, if you do it because you feel yourself ideologically and morally bound to it, there you go. You deserve it, all the way.
Now let's talk legally. If you, as an immigrant, want to serve your nation by adoption, in order to obtain the rights of citizenship, because your family and friends live "here", and you feel morally bound to do it...
Need i go further? The answer is yes, you serve in Mexican army, you are welcome to Mexico. Period. |

yes, 100 percent. if they are willing to fight and to die for our nation, then i think they should be considered british citizens |

They have more right to live here than the immigrants from Pakistan and Africa. At least they help our country not hinder or try to blow it up. |

no they fight because they get paid. the Gurkha's join the british army because the wage is considerably higher than any other they can get at home. we owe them nothing |
|

Back to the drawing board

No, I know it sounds a bit tough but frankly this whole Gurkha issue is playing into the hands of the far right and whatever the Gurkas' claims may be the UK has to ask its electorate whether they want a law passed to exempt people who have served in the military from current immigration or any other legislation. I personally do not think we should deport or deny anyone from citizenship in the UK who are making their lives here, but the logical outcome is that the floodgates would then be open for the Gurkas who live outside the UK to settle with their families. I suspect there is something else going on here and this cause is especially being taken up by our current BNP and other right wing parties who also have a policy to disenfranchise anyone young person who refuses to do military service. Divide the immigrants into the 'worthy and the not worthy', brilliant. And remember that one of the two young soldiers tragically murdered in Northern Ireland recently was Turkish. |

Major Disaster
 |
No.
It will lead to yet another reason for even more immigration, people the whole world over will be filing false claims that, on
some obscure occasion, impossible to prove, they 'fought' for us!
They fought because we paid them. Nothing else.
Yet more chaos, expensive litigation. Don't we have ENOUGH problems with immigration already?
Why the hell does EVERYBODY in the world demand to come over here? |

I don't think it's fair that the government would rather let in muslims who want to kill us all and keep those boys out.
It's just wrong. |
