Illegal workers' employers still being pursued

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration is pursuing employers who knowingly hire and exploit illegal immigrants, a policy not significantly different from the Bush administration's approach.
The guidelines, sent to Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents yesterday, call for imposing fines and pressing criminal charges against employers who break the law.
The priority is to go after employers, but the policy says agents will continue to arrest illegal workers as long as local U.S. attorneys commit to prosecuting cases against their employers.
The Obama administration stresses that humanitarian guidelines will be followed in more cases than under President George W. Bush.
As a candidate, Barack Obama promised an immigration policy that would shift emphasis from workplace raids and place greater focus on employers who hire illegal immigrants and overall immigration reform. Some immigration advocates were hopeful that Obama would sign an executive order that would freeze immigration raids, but that hasn't happened.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has said the agency will focus on “renewing a priority on employers who are making money off of these illegal immigrants and giving them jobs that should be going to
American workers, as opposed to just counting numbers.”
In 2008, ICE brought criminal charges against 135 employers and 968 workers. ICE is part of Napolitano's department.
Napolitano said building cases against employers could include auditing documents that employees fill out when they join a company, having illegal workers go undercover, and talking to people who regularly interact with the employers.

Illegal aliens should be thrown out of the country and thrown in prison the second time they are captured.

I can just see it now, millions of illegals lining up at the doors of ICE offices, "Hay meester, can I turn in my boss, and get a green card!"
Or may be that's the plan, get them all down there so they can arrest and deport them.

You do not need illegals to do this. Just use an agent of Hispanic origin and give him fake papers for the sting.
If an illegal was used, then the case would likely be thrown out of court. |

Actually, I think it would be a good idea to offer a visa or work permit to SOME illegal workers at targeted companies in return for their help in convicting their employers. Do it enough and employers would sure think twice about hiring illegal aliens, knowing that any one of them could be a federal informer. |

I would have to say no because if we use them then we have to give them breaks in getting green cards. Use undercover cops for that. That is what they are trained in. |

If it were possible, we should use legal citizens, but that isn't possible. We would then be taking people to court for hiring illegals who were not illegal. It would be like if the cops used fake drugs in a sting, and then when they get to court, the people who tried to buy drugs could argue that they did nothing wrong--all they did was overpay for pencil shavings and powdered sugar, which is not a crime.
I like the shift of focus to come off the illegals and onto the people paying them. If there weren't any jobs here for them to work, they wouldn't come. We can try to chase down tens of thousands of illegals, or we can chase down the hundreds of people that pay them (and who are truly the ones stealing work from Americans by giving the job to someone willing to work for less). The Americans who hire illegals are the big cheats, and the most deserving of punishment. |
