Many immigrants came to this country without being able to speak English but learned it very fast because they had to.
I do not understand how someone can live in a country for any amount of time and not be able to even have a basic proficiency. Even when we travel in other countries, we pick up at least some of the local language.
No, I do not think that immigrants should be required to be proficient in English before they come. But I do think that they should be encouraged to learn the language. Many in the past have been able to do this on their own. But I think there are now also volunteer organizations that help immigrants learn English. |

My question is how can they give driving tests in like 12 different languages when all of our roads sign are in english? |

Maybe a very basic English test at first, then a more tough test later.
It's difficult to learn English in a non-English country, but easy to learn in an English speaking country. |

yes because i am tired of going out to eat and they dont speak english. Especially in a drive thru. then they always screw up my order when i call in a pizza cuz they dont know english. They are taking over everywhere and now you have to speak spanish and be bi lingual to even get a job anymore. thats screwed up. |

Yes. We have too many so called citizens that cannot even speak the language properly. If you leave your home country to come to america then you should be forced to learn our language and politics and become a true american! |

To bad that people consider it racist to learn the language of the land they want to move to....
1 year ago, we had an immigrant drive off a bridge that was under construction... I say immigrant because this state doesn't ask for proof of immigrant status.. Anyway, dude couldn't speak English and couldn't read, yet he was given a license.. When he went off the end of the under construction over pass and plummeted 20 feet to the highway below, he landed on a school bus.. Luckily the bus had no kids in it...

Yes, because as it is now, our tax dollars are spent for teachers who must teach in different languages to accommodate these people! Just another reason to stop illegal immigration! |

Queen of the Nice: Are you limited only legal immigrants to set of immigrants? Or do you include "illegals" also as elements?
All legals immigrants should be required to show English Proficiency withing 6 months of arriving. Enforcement of immigration law must be a top priority. Proof of sponsorship, proof of not a ward of welfare, have needed skill/training. Will not be a burden to society, and has means to return to home country if things do not work out.
If you add illegals, then you would need to fire most of the Democrats in the DoJ and ICE and Congress who have tacitly if not explicitly encouraged these illegals to come here. In some cities, asking for a driver's license from an illegal can be seen as discrimination.

I think they should take an English test, but one problem is that English is NOT the official language of the US. The US has NO official language. Canada has TWO official languages, and the US none. |

Whta narrow minded rubbish some people think and speak here. America(n) is not just USA. In South America for example Spanish Portuguese etc are spoken widely.
