I think they should be able to speak basic English - to be able to manage to communicate. Or, they should show that they have the ability and dedication to learn our language, and then they should stick to that. I think it is an unfair drain on our resources having to fund interpreters in hopsitals, driving lessons, schools and such. I don't think this is a racist view - I think its wonderful having people from other cultures here, but we all need to be able to communitcate, there has to be one language that we all speak. |

Any person living in any part of the world should be very fluent in the language of the country this includes people from the U.K. who emegrate. |

Nyla
Yes definatelty. |

belinda m
yes but why should they when the government are so willing to accommodate them by providing interpreter every step pf the way. It pisses me off. when i'm at work I can't help anyone because no one speaks english then I have to wait for an interpreter which wastes time money and resources. |

I dont think it should be a prerequisite for them to come here but i think they should really try to learn the language once they are here. |

I think so, and if they can't already speak good English then they should be willing to learn - it's already a language spoken by millions across the world, so it'll only prove to be beneficial to people in the long run. |

I think yes because I think that if anyone makes their life in another country they should adopt their language and way of life, or at least respect it. For example I don't understand wy all these 'Brits' moveout to Spain and want a fry up for breakfast, English Ale and so on, surely you should want to take on the country's cuisine, language etc, otherwise stay at home! |

Not only Speak, but read and write ENGLISH aswell |

Yes, that would be good. At very least, speaking SOME English should be a requirement. It is hardly conducive to racial harmony when people have lived here for years, yet have not bothered to learn the language. |

bumblebee
No, but you'd think that if you wanted to emigrate somewhere you'd try and at least learn a bit of the basic language just to make life easier. I know I would. |

I don't understand anyone who would live in a country without being able to communicate. How would you see a doctor? What would happen in an emergency? How would you work? Could you understand your payslips? What about if you need to drive and want to work get insurance etc. What about if you have children and need to enrol them in school?
I don't think it would be easy to control, but I do think it should be part of the immigration process. |

YES. its is only common sense. How do you survive in a society you cannot interract with? - silly me the taxpayer!! |

Yes very much. |

No! If America has to put up with people coming here and never attempting to learn even basic English, then you can deal with it too.
(lol, just kidding..of course) |

Yes yes yes. That is one of my pet hates, what ever country you go to you should respect that language and make an effort. I hate people who come to england and have been here years and still don't know how to speak our language. Ignorance thats the word. |

It's recommended for rural areas of england. but london is hugely multicultural, and has allsorts of cultures and languages. |

Maybe you should learn that the country is Britain and includes others than the English, including the Welsh who have their own non-English language. Think before you open your mouth! |

Well it helps to speak the lingo. How else are you going to receive any help that you might need? It doesnt have to be good, lets face it how many English people speak a second language? All the immigrants that come into England are bilingual no matter how sparse the spoken language fluency is.
If they are required to speak good English then lets have all the English that emigrate to foreign countires also have the same requirements lets see how far that would take them |

.
How many of us with English as a first language also speak well in a second?
No they should have survival English and not be allowed in without it. |

Pope my ride!
might be an idea, on the account that very few enlish people speak any other languages at all due to their lousy education system! i have lived in many countries around the world, and the worst people undoubtedly for even comprehending languages are the brits and americans! |

You would have to move out everyone in Birmingham, Manchester and all those other crap places where you can't understand their English. When they move to London as a Child they have to go to special classes so the teachers can understand them |

ghost_in_red
yes sure, but even if they learn really hard in their countries it is strange for them to accommodate with the many accents in England |

barneyboomagoo
YES - without a doubt.
Why would anyone want to live in a country that they cannot survive in - as in they couldn't organise fundamental things like shopping, banking, paying bills. It would be sooooo frustrating to not be able to get help when needed due to a communcation problem.
Not only that but to be able to work in England they would need to communicate with English speaking people for pretty much any job. |

?
Of course. It would be a sign of respect |
