The official language should be English only, those who don't want to speak English would be welcome to go home to a country that speaks whatever they wish. |

No way! As a Latin American, having grown up in NY, I think it's pathetic that some people move to a new country and don't even try to learn that language.
No excuses for being a "multi-cultural or ethnic society" |

NO, JUST ENGLISH. Why have two languages? This is rediculous. For the last 300 years, this country has had one dominant language - english, and we have functioned very well thank you very much. We are considered the great melting pot, but like it or not we do have one culture, we can be identified as a society by key things. Our language being one. If we take this language crap too far, we will split the country and it will destroy us. It will be less efficient for our economy to function, there is no room for communication error in our hospitals, and our children should be focusing on mathematics and science in school instead of wasting time teaching them another language only because the people that come to this country are too lazy to learn english. |

English is the language we all use to speak to each other, and the language of our laws. There are over 200 languages spoken in this country. Spanish may be the predominant second language in the south, but there are equally Russian and Korean enclaves, and many areas of the east and mid west would more logically have a second language of Polish or German.
Why would Spanish be second? |

There is no need to have two. We have done well with one. I think adding a second would make it even harder for those wanting to immigrate legally into the US.
If we are picking a second one I would think German would be a better choice, they are many languages that are similar and a wider variety of immigrants would benefit from it.
Oh course if we are just worried about what most people are speaking then we have to make it Mandarin, more people in the world use that language then any other. |

Official language entails more than just making it available to those who wish to use it. If Spanish or any other language were given the status of official language then people would be free to insist that:
All government publications be printed in that language;
Congressional sessions would have to allow speeches and voting to take place in either language;
Federal courts would have to be able to conduct business in either language;
Interstate commerce, including contracts, could be written in either language;
All federal government services would have to be available in either language, throughout the entire country. |

No, English should be the agreed upon language.
If we need another language we should be learning Chinese or Arabic so we can more easily communicate with them before conflicts erupt.
In this country the inability to speak or understand English is a real hindrance, maybe not to the people who only speak Spanish between themselves, but to those of us who need to communicate with them on the job or understand some important issue they are discussing that involves our job or workplace.
"What is that burning smell in the room down the hall" in Spanish doesn't mean anything to me but I'd kinda like to know if we might have a fire!! |

Absolutely NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the United States of America -- English is our Official Language and if you don't want to learn English -- get out! |

I speak a Native American language -- Lakota.
It is my first language. English is second. I will never recognize Enlgish as an official language, or Spanish either, but moving to a country and refusing to learn or recognize the language that the majority of it's citizens speak is idiotic. |

Yeah, but in addition to spanish and english, we should be able to speak french as well. Those who oppose this and only want english as the sole language are part of the reason why we speak mainly one language...they're too damn arrogant to realize that we're the only country that doesn't speak more than one language...mainly as a result of their arrogance. The two as*faces known as MSG and dreaming are part of that arrogance(and lack of brains and compassion). |

No . 85% of the people in the USA speak English.
Since the huge majority speak English. Why should Spanish even be considered ? |

Why are all the different native American languages not considered official languages in the US
Many people are saying that if you come here learn the language but how many of you speak a native american langage |

America doesn't have an official language. English is the primary language but is not exactly official. In my opinion, it doesn't really matter whether America declares one or two or even three official languages. If people want to learn a 2nd, or 3rd, or 4th....well, it is available everywhere. Also, I think knowing more languages is always better than knowing just one. I speak English, Spanish, Chinese, Cantonese, and little French and I'm proud of myself. |

Totally yes. Like why would we not? |

I believe its official languages should contain those of its direct neighbors. Canada as well as Mexico. As is done in Switzerland....For being such a small country it has 4 official languages...it works, and you can choose to learn whatever second language you want in school. |

This country is made up of so many ethnic cultures and many Americans speak a second language. Let sleeping dogs lie and forget about this "Official Language" crap. |

Whether it's "an official language" or not, people need to accept that a whole lot of people speak Spanish in the U.S.
But, perhaps just to avoid all of the pain and agony that people will suffer if Spanish is declared an official language, perhaps no, we shouldn't have it as another official language.
However, I would recommend learning Spanish to anyone. If nothing else, it may help to ward off alzheimers when you're old and grey. |

I believe that English will still dominate for a long time but Spanish is gaining inroads as their population increases. |
