President Teddy Roosevelt once said, and I agree with him, that the United States is not a polyglot boarding house; in this country we have one language and that language is English. Speak whatever languages you like (I am bilingual myself) - but the language of the country is English and if you want to see how complex life gets when you have 2 official languages just go to Quebec. |

I have Latino's and Latina's in my family, but only one is blood. However, he's a "Cocoa Nut" to me, brown on the outside, and all white on the inside!! He also doesn't know a single word of spanish, and you'd think by looking at him he was samoine or from Hawaii. Anyhoo, I totally agree with you on the whole language thing. I know quite a bit of spanish because my step-mom was hispanic, but otherwise, she was a chicano WITCH!!! And the fact, that my sister who works at a school in Texas where their making all of the kids and employee's learn Spanish, is going against that law we passed 2 decades ago!! My sister is "OUTRAGED" about it!! If the States people came to this school alot of the leaders of the school in Texas would be in alot of trouble and be considered breaking alot of laws!!! SPEAK ENGLISH, your in our country learn the lango I say!!! We have to tolerate those who know our lango and act like they dont.!! They should have to tolerate learning ENGLISH!!! |

However, the standard is English ~ as Mexico has Spanish, Poland Polish, and Germany German.

The USA has a diversity of cultures and there should be no main or principle language. The USA should cherish its diversity and not restrict people from speaking their native language where and whenever they want to. This is a FREE country afterall and freedom of speach is the first Amendment to the Constitution.
English should be a primary base language but should not be an official language.
And please be advised that a lot of Mexicans don't like to be called hispanics. Where did that would come from anyway? This is no country called Hispana. Each Spanish speaking nation has a country you know. |

People are ignorant fools.
First off, to be technical about it, there is no actual official language in this country. Look it up. Yes, some states are passing referendums that designate English as the official language. But there is no federal mandate. Its really a waste of time. English is in no threat to be supplanted as the dominant language (again just being technical)
I live in New York. In Brooklyn. Immigrants abound.You can walk down the block and hear every language in the world. It doesn't threaten me at all.
All an official language does is to ensure that laws and government operate with English. It does nothing to make people speak the language in the streets or at work.
And for those people who are opposed to having your children learn a 2nd language, then you really are ignorant. All it would do would be to benefit your child immeasurably. They can communicate with more people, do business with more people, and its a proven fact that speaking more than one language allows learning to occur easier for a person, and helps with memory retention. |
