Since most Mexicans immigrate here for economic opportunity and freedom, is the fence like the Berlin Wall?
Find answers to your legal question.

Since most Mexicans immigrate here for economic opportunity and freedom, is the fence like the Berlin Wall?

If you cut off escape for people who are maltreated, exploited and marginalized by a corrupt government and economic system, isn't fencing in potential refugees from abuse a cowardly way of handling the situation? Shouldn't the US instead make the country (Mexico in this case) clean up it's human rights position and treat it's people right? If these were immigrants from Rwanda, for example, wouldn't we properly label them political refugees and let them into the US without a blink? Is that fair?

I know emotions run very high on this issue for a range of reasons. But please try to make your case articulately and calmly. Thanks.

But, Ed F, it's clear that the fence is keeping people in Mexico. An unintended side effect, maybe. -- But that's one function the fence now serves, anyhow.

in part says:

"President Felipe Calderon says more than 6,000 people died last year in drug-related violence, and U.S. authorities have reported a spike in killings, kidnappings and home invasions linked to the cartels — some of it in cities far from the border, such as Phoenix and Atlanta."

in part says:

"The case illustrates how a terrifyingly common crime in Latin America has moved across the border into the United States: Criminals and their family members are being kidnapped by fellow criminals and held for six-figure ransoms. The abductions are occurring in the Phoenix area at the rate of practically one per day, and police suspect they have led to killings in which bound and bullet-riddled bodies have been found dumped in the desert."

in part says:

"Chihuahua Joint Operation reported that Mexican soldiers killed three armed suspects early Friday during another firefight near El Vergel, about 60 miles south of Juárez.
Mexican authorities also identified the federal agent killed Thursday in Juárez as Gabriel Duran Lopez, 31, and reported the death of Chihuahua state police agent Juan Luis Armenta Gonzalez, 25, who was shot to death late Thursday.
A group of armed men attacked Gonzalez and two other state police agents in the Satelite subdivision."

"Mexico’s drug wars are heating up with the cartels sending a powerful message to those who attempt to stop them.
Suspected drug smugglers have dumped the beheaded or mutilated bodies of five people around the Mexican capital in recent days in what appear to be revenge killings for a cocaine seizure at the airport." ... "Mexico has been blighted by beheadings and other gory killings in a 3-year-old war between drug gangs for control of smuggling routes to the United States."

"Tijuana: Nine decapitated bodies were found in a vacant lot in Tijuana on Sunday believed to be the result of a wave of violence that claimed at least 23 lives over the weekend in this border city plagued by warring traffickers, authorities said."

in part says:

"Mexican police report a surge of violence that has resulted in a rash of execution-style murders in towns bordering the United States.
Police said the victims have been tied, blindfolded and tortured before being shot in the head."

And the list goes on and on.

Can you find any documentation that the East Berlin people climbing the Wall were in any way trying to conduct criminal activities in West Berlin? Do you see any difference now?

And just how (exactly) are you proposing that the US "make" Mexico clean up it's human rights position and treat its people right? Iraqi style "occupation"?

The fence is supposed to keep the "bad guys" out.
I'm not trying to imply that the US doesn't have "bad guys" of its own, but why import more?

The legal immigrants have a process by which to enter this country.

Or are you proposing that the existing law just be ignored and have an "open border" policy?

Okay, let them come to your house.

I don't think this is like the Berlin Wall. Every country has the right to defend its borders. The Berlin Wall had ideological purposes, not legal ones. Honestly, no matter how hard-working an immigrant is, no country wants them without documents. Why? Because you have to earn the right to live somewhere. Otherwise, everybody could live anywhere and all the people would live on the Western hemisphere. Immigration laws do not intend to be mean, they protect the rights of the citizens. Imagine a world without laws...it would be chaotic.

This is not black and white. I know there are people who have no choice but there are a lot of mean people too who just think this is easier. Wait and pay the fees like legals do. Maybe there should be a way to give waivers to people who cannot pay but they should make the effort to legalize their status. Do you know how many people get married just for a green card and mess up the life of other people? Most people associate illegals with Mexico and forget that there are illegals even from Western Europe... I know people who have been waiting for amnesty so they overstayed their visa waiver for that. They are not poor people. They strongly believe that they will become citizens and they think they have more rights than citizens or legals. You know when I would give them amnesty just because they are lazy to wait or do the paperwork or don't want to pay!!

The Mexicans can walk to the border and fill out the forms and pay the fees for a temporary visa. I do it all the time when I visit Canada. I also pay for my car insurance, registration, taxes etc. If I can do it then they can do it.

Ed F
The Mexico fence is to keep people out.
The Berlin Wall was to keep people in.
Quite a difference!

elizabeth_teasley
Not even close! This is just another liberal twist on the facts to suit the "cause". That being... open borders and the US taxpayer being held hostage to the looters stealing our standard of living!

Thats a very different way of looking at it... Thanks for the opinion.
But we do let them into the US as long as they arent storing extra people or illegal items.

But I dont think that it would go as well if we just started flying over food and dropping it in Mexico.
