During his testimony during the Senate hearing last week, economist Professor Richard B. Freeman, Program Director of Labor Studies at the National Bureau of Economic Research noted that in no job category do immigrants constitute a majority. I believe he said 30% was the highest concentration. So literally there is no job that Americans don't do. Not theory, but fact.
However if shortages of labor do occur the normal economic responses would apply. Raising compensation to attract workers or increasing the efficiency of workers through mechanization or other methods is what's usually done. There may be certain jobs that don't make economic sense. The existence of a huge pool of willing workers of has encouraged the use of labor where it would not have occurred had our immigration laws been enforced. It's not like the economy won't adapt. That's what markets do.
You also have to realize that just as illegal immigrants don't take jobs from legal residents in a zero sum calculation, their absence will also mean that fewer jobs will need to be done. Illegal immigrants, like everyone else, aren't just workers. They are also consumers of goods and services and when they leave that role, a certain number of jobs that are related to that consumption will also not be needed.
My hope the increased demand for labor will allow teenagers once again to enter the world of work. And even more important for our society, the disturbing level of unemployment among black males and the social problems that creates could be reduced. I would also like to see prisoners work. There is no rehabilitation without work. Work is what responsible members of a society do. |

I dont think many people would go for it. Americans want high paying jobs. I think that illegal immigrants are what formed this country. This country would not be successful... My opinion anyways. |

Well it sure won't be one of our couch potato cable TV watchin while talking on the cell phone well fare state types. They darn sure aren't going to give up that check, much less their Hud housing, ADC, Medicade, Wick, and other programs, not to mention that "earned income" rebate check for not paying income tax, to go do a $25.00 an hour construction job in N.O. L.A. !!! Much less a $15.00 an hour job in a Days Inn in Huston, cleaning up after the "refugees". |

We can cut the Unemployment rate to just 1.1%....... I know if I did not have a job I would be more then happy to work at whatever I need to so that my kids can have food.... I am so sick of people saying Americans will not work! Americans have all ways been hard warking! |

I have worked the fields. I have worked as a maid. I have worked in a chicken plant. My son has worked as a pipe layer. He also has worked construction. So it will be the AMERICAN PEOPLE AND LEGAL IMMIGRANTS who will work those jobs. |

have you looked at all the jobs that you don't even get considered for if you can't speak Spanish. There is a huge market that is shut off if you are not bilingual.. you can't be an office assistant if you can't speak Spanish.. |

You do not have to force people to do these jobs; you merely have to offer up a good wage to get them to do so; but here is the bigger problem that is ignored. Let 12 million people come here illegally and tell the world its ok, amneify them (is that a word), and let everyone know the law does not matter.
What you don't get is the next wave of 12 to 15 million is going to include some guys from the Middle East; and they will be here to do a job as well...on us! |

Unskilled American workers would do the jobs. They did them before there were so many illegals here, and they'd do them again. We do not have more jobs than people willing to do them. There are Americans having difficult times getting jobs all over the country. Americans have a history of doing what they need to do. We're not helpless. |

I think that the wages would have to be raised to the point that people are attracted to those jobs. Then they will be filled. And that's probably what would happen.
If you offered jobs for $10 to $15/hr, they'd get filled, no matter what they were.
I also don't think that prices would go up substantially because of it. People are still only going to pay so much for each product, and, if they still need it, then they'll just buy less of it.
I also think that "illegals" aren't always underpaid, or are always working for less than Americans. In the construction business, illegals are often more qualified because they've come here with construction skills, so they aren't hired because they will work for less. They are hired because they are qualified, and they work for fair market wages. (Of course they don't get Union Cards.) |

First of all I am a legal citizen here in the US, but I support this cause because I feel it is very noble.
Some people don't support this cause because they have never seen their children begging for food around the table and you don't have a penny to feed them. Why do you think they dare to cross the scorching dessert to come into this country? Some people don't support it because they have not seen their children die of hunger or a disease that can easily be cured because of lack of money!!
Yes they work out on the fields picking fruit all day long, raining, snowing, out in the blazing sun for less than minimun pay, or clean urinals, wash the dishes at the restaurants. I understand as someone here on yahoo answers said, that the children have to start somewhere and that they would be doing these types of jobs because they have to start somewhere. Maybe the person is right, but would you like you children to perform these kinds of jobs? I know I would not like my daughter to do this.
Somebody said that if the prices go up, economy will go up. I see gas prices skyhigh and the wages are still the same. Anybody agree??
Now have you ever wondered why is it that the price of the veggies out in the stores are cheap? Yes, it is because these people come into the US to do these jobs for very little money. If the US starts paying what they are supposed to pay (minimum wage) prices will sure go up. Many people don't understand this because they live off of welfare.
Undocumented Immigrants do not qualify for welfare because of their status in this country. Some people may say that their children do qualify if born here in the US. Yes, they do, but don't forget they are US citizens. Now a days it is not easy to come and have children here in the US if you are not a legal resident. Here where I live, pregnant women that don't have proof of legal residency have to pay all doctor visits adding up to $3000.00 the least.
I am not for the undocumented people who come here and harm others. But the ones who come here to look for a better life for their families, I support. Don't you think that if all they wanted to do is harm, they would cross the river through the night and rob the people near it? Why do they walk miles to cross check points and get norther? Yes, they risk themselves to bring food to their family's table.
I work, go to college and am a mom, and feel very disappointed at those people who live off of welfare, but lets not forget that all US citizens can qualify for it depending on their income, not only the children of these people.
And please understant that it is not onlye the HISPANICS who come here illegally. It is everybody around the world who has seen poverty to the lowest of its levels. One thing some people here in the US will never get to see. |

First, I believe that most Americans will do any safe job for a good wage. The problem is that back in the 40s 50s farm help was mostly Americans why can`t we still run this way? Because large corporations are out of control,we are letting them control everything from large oil profits to voting machines. If we stop illegal workers and makes it harder to get here maybe it will motivate them to rise up to Mexican government, that is the heart of the problem. |

You're right. No one would take the jobs because people are to picky (even the poor college students). Imigrants are just filling the jobs that need to be done because they're not so picky. Oh, and most arn't ILLEGAL..or they couldn't get a job! |

So just MAYBE if we get rid of all the ILLEGALS, LEGAL people who work in Housekeeping, Harvesting, and in Manufacturing will finally get GOOD wages. |
