This happened about 7 months ago, but I'd love to find out what actually happened. I landed in Chicago on my way to Ontario (I was transferring planes to fly to Detroit). I was going to be staying with friends for 6 weeks in Canada last summer. When I got to passport control, I was faced with a stern looking immigration offer (much to be expected), and he asked questions like 'why are you here' and 'do you have the details of your return flights'. Anyway, I'm assuming I 'passed' his questions OK, as he asked me to have my photo taken and give my fingerprints (standard practice). After I'd given my dabs though, he said 'I didn't like how you did it with your right hand', and we're going to have to take a secondary check or set (for the life of me I can't remember what his exact word was). Anyway, I had to go and sit in this area for about 15 mins, and they had my passport. I thought I was going to be interviewed or something, but then after about 15-20 mins, another immigration official came out with my passport and customs form etc, and said that that was it.
What I'd like to know is what they actually did there, as they didn't take another set of my fingerprints, even though the immigration guy said he didn't like how I'd given them?

Thanks Fred S. Quick question; is this incident likely to delay my entry into the US in the future, as I plan to go back over the summer (albeit crossing over a land border).

Your one finger probably came back as a mismatch to the fingerprint taken when you received the visa.
The officers in the room where you were sent have technology and equipment which sorted out the problem without the need for any further questions.
They didn't need you to discover the mismatch was not because you were an impostor. If they had believed that you were not the rightful holder of the documents, they would have had "a few more questions" and a warning, normally called the "Miranda warning."
EDIT: If your print doesn't come out as a match, it'll slow you down, but at least now, there's a record of the first time. |

this happened to me a long time ago, they take your passport and do a load of stringent checks on it, they use a UV light to check the security pages, check with the passport office your photo and details. they also watch you very closely to see what you are doing. |
