I want to do my final year in University in the USA, is it true you get up to a year to apply for and find a job if you want to after completing your degree?

Not precisely. It is possible to sign up for a year of practical training, that allows you to work in your field for up to a year. However, that doesn't automatically mean you can continue to work in the US after that year of training. Also, many universities will only allow students to transfer 2 years of credits, so you may find that you will have to go to 2 years of classes to get a degree from that university. If you're applying to US schools, you'll need to check into that. |

Optional Practical Training is permitted after completion of the course of study, & the student must complete OPT within the 14-month period following completion of the course of study. |

you have to attend college for a year before you apply for OPT optional practical training. all this information is in your I-20. I applied for OPT after i graduated from college... after you apply for your SSN and work visa you will be able to work for 12 months :) i think that's better, that way you can focus on school. good luck |

You can work for up to one year after graduating in the OPT part of the visa. And if you convince an employer to apply for an H-1B visa for you, the OPT will be extended by 5 months.
However, if you do not have a job to step into for the OPT period you have about 2 weeks after graduation to leave the USA unless you can get a tourist vsa.
However, to get that F-1 you have to prove you have access to at least $20,000 for your expenses.
And unless your degree is in the sciences, engineering or a medical field, the chances of getting a job for the OPT period is very low right now. |
