The shadow immigration minister highlighted the 300,000 workers arriving in the UK from outside the EU, saying that number should be cut.
If not, he said: "The benefits of immigration will be lost among the social and economic difficulties caused by the sheer scale of the current numbers."
Lib Dem home affairs spokesman Nick Clegg said the 16% increase in east European immigrants given National Insurance numbers "confirm that the numbers are considerably higher than the Government first estimated".
He said the Government had "failed to plan adequately both in terms of housing and funding for local services".
What amazes me is it has taken the MP years to work this all out, shortage of housing etc and the great influx?!? |

No, its cos they sold off council houses and havent built any more! |

The shortage of social housing is because of the lack of investment in affordable housing since the early 80s.
Take your immigrant bashing elsewhere. |

Talk about irony. There has been a large influx of Polish immigrants into North Northamptonshire and one of the industries there is moving its operations to Poland by next year, go figure.................... |

MORE RACIST CRAP! CAN'T YOU MORONS THINK OF SOMETHING NEW TO MAKE UP? IF YOU WANT A JOB, JUST WALK DOWN ANY HIGH STREET AND LOOK AT THE VACANCIES ADS IN THE SHOP WINDOW! BUT I SUPPOSE THAT WOULD MEAN YOU HAVING TO DRAG YOUR **** OUT OF BED WHICH WOULD BE TOO MUCH TROUBLE. |

It is actually a combination of factors. There is not actually a lack of housing in the UK there is however a lack of affordable housing and this is directly liked to two policy areas over the last 3 decades. The Right to Buy policies introduced in the 1980s by the Conservatives wiped out quality local authority housing throughout the south east (London in particular). Secondly the new development that has been occurring in many previously industrial working class areas has been targeted at luxury housing as this is more lucrative to developers and openly encouraged by some local authorities even if there is no demand for that type of housing in that area. As for employment there are plenty of jobs out there; they may be rubbish but what can you expect from a service based economy. I would suggest work in the public sector but with below inflation pay increases and the big pension con even that is not a safe route these days. The wonders of neoliberalism. |

yep, lower houses available as they houose all the immigrants / asylum seekers, lower jobs because they can pay these guys the minimum wage and they dont complain because they send it back to thier own country and live like kings there. |

So you are expected to believe - but ever since the fifties there has been a shortage. The main reason for the present shortage is the practise of selling the council houses instead of assisting those ready to buy to do so on the property market. Also many councils would be delighted to build housing but they need the government to release appropriate funding. There are large areas of run down land where compulsory purchase orders could be used to provide places to develop, but whilst every govt we get is more interested in spending on weapons and wars and junkets instead it is very easy to pin the blame on immigrants isn't it? It is about time we pointed the finger to the top where the blame truly resides isn't It? |

No, the lack of housing is due to the Thatcher governments selling off council housing in the eighties.
There isn't a lack of jobs. Either you never lived through the eighties or you are just (at best) misinformed. |

Depends what position in work you seek for.
A properly qualified Docter / Dentist / Lawyer is welcomed.
So are folks that pick turnips and cannot speak English.
The whole situation is more competetive, and complex, but there are those that wish for a flexible global work-force.
So is it OK for qualified Brits to dissapear to Australia, but not for Polish Migrants to work in our feilds ?
We only have to look back to post-war days, when there was a massive influx of folks from the Caribbean and India in the medical and transport systems. Still there, and fair play.
I have taken my skills and experience ex-pat, which is not emigrating, simply because the pay and conditions were fantastic.
Such it is for others, and I feell that if native Brits cannot compete with the immigrant workers, then they are responsible for sitting on their bottoms and letting others do the hard work

The shortage of housing is due to more people wanting to buy houses than are currently available on the market. This is simple economics.
Immigrants in the UK are taking jobs that British people are unqualified or unwilling to do. UK state education leaves much to be desired and the sad but undeniable fact is that employers prefer immigrant workers because they are more disciplined and better educated than their British counterparts. British companies want to employ the best in the world because the best in Britain is not good enough anymore. Why would you employ a British benefit-scrounging chav with a bad attitude when you could just as easily employ a keen, hard working Pole?
The lack of job vacancies you are referring to must surely be in the unskilled sector of the job market, because the skilled sector is near full employment. There is actually a need for MORE skilled immigrants if the British economy is to grow and expand to its full potential. |

A lack of jobs? You're joking, mate - just ask the NHS. From personal experience, midwives are desperately needed, current midwives are overworked as there are not enough of them. |

shortage of housing and jobs? just give me a hint, mate, whereabouts (rougly) do you live, and I will give you plenty of offers on both. |

On the other hand, surely the large numbers of Brits living in Spain and other countries must free up housing? And the immigrants here are also contributing to the economy?
The housing shortage is mainly caused by people buying second homes, people living in much bigger houses than they need, especially older people whose kids have left home, and younger people buying large properties as an investment...
And unemployment mostly results from people not having enough skills and training. |

The Government Statistics Service today confirmed ther have been 2.2 million immigrants in the past 10 years. Gee Thanks Tony.
Anybody who wonders why there is a housing shortage and job shortage needs to "do the maths" as they say in America. |

Your unemployment rate is only about 5 percent, what about the immigrants who come to your country that are actually qualified to do a job, here in the states our immigrants are mostlly unskilled and take the jobs that most of us will not. It is hard to believe that all of the immigrants coming to your country are taking all of your skilled job trades as most immigrants are unskilled laborers.. Also I have looked into immigrating to the UK myselfand have searched job oppenings and there are more jobs available in London then I would have ever immagined and the pay is far greater there then it is in the states. I understand your concern, but do you really want a job hand picking beats? farmers can not afford to pay high enough wages for you to work for them so they have to turn to the immigrants. I do believe that they should not be sending the majority of there earnings to their home country, most of the money should stay in the country it is earned in. I am a proffesional salesman and if my work visa is approved I will not be taking the job from you because I will work for less but because I strive to earn more then you sell more than you and I have a needed skill. You should really try to further your education or figure out what it is that you are good at and I am sure a non english speaking non skilled immigrant will not be any threat to you. I mean how many skilled immigrants can be coming there, The Americans are not excactly beating down the walls trying to take your jobs, and most of the Polish take low paying jobs. The devoloped countries do not have a high # of immigrants coming to the UK so I find the point you are trying to make hard to believe. |

yes it is. when the immigrants have brought this country to its knees, they will all go back and leave us to pick up the pieces. our businesses are already relocating to poland ready for their return. cadburys is there for one. i think the labour government has given us a serious slap in the face. they want us downtrodden where we belong in their opinion. cheers labour |

Of course it is, anyone who says otherwise is ignorant. You don't need to be mastermind to work out that when there is a shortage of resources, letting more people in will make it worse but some people, in fact quite a lot of people do not have the intelligence to grasp that. |

It's just the begining, see in France in what sheet we are !!!!!
Immigrants now have pratically more rights than us. In France it's too late, you'd better send them to their country before they take your and send you to their countries. |

immigration situation is crippling this country's housing market. its also destroying the point of social housing in this country. just like its destroying the health service and the infrastructure over all!. the fault is with new labour. they just opened the flood gates with no planning, no structure in place, no thought or regard for public concerns. U.K.I .P. is right. we urgently need to close our borders for 5 years, just! to sort the problem out and re structure. but then! if we go into the EU. we wont be able to do that. new labour will have sold off our last chance to save whats left of this country. economic migrants I've got no problem with. but we should put in place the same system as Jersey. make it easy to come and work. but no benefits at all. and put vagrancy laws in place. + no right to buy property. as for asylum seekers and illegals in general its time we closed the gates. they have proved dangerous destructive and very costly to this country both in the social damage their presence brings, and over all financial costs. as for terrorists!. we need to put back the death penalty for these idiots. we need to stand in control and demand respect for Briton and its people. if an immigrant isn't able to give and show! that respect then they have no place here and should be kicked out with no delay. the human rights act should be re written with some sence of reality!!. as an aside! to all this, ithink people should stop looking to politicians to look after their interests. they should be regarded in much the same way as cheap market stall traders. check every thing before you buy. and understand that personal greed is their only! motivation. your interests are just some thing they are forced to agnowlage to get the job their target is not what you need. but the least you will tollerate. get that into your head and your vote might start to count. |
