No I don't think that people in America should be forced to speak Spanish. I can already speak Spanish but right now I'm learning some French and after that I might try German or Russian or Mandarin but that is only my choice . |

My 1st grade daughter is learning Spanish. It is required in her school system. Her father and I are not happy about it. She is learning French at home (family in France) and it's confusing for her. Plus her Spanish teacher is always mispronouncing our last name. Which would be acceptable if Spanish were her teacher's primary language.
I studied Spanish in high school and college. I traveled in South America and loved that I had the ability to communicate. But I don't like it being forced on my 6 yr. old. |

There is no cultural requirement for learning spanish. However, many schools have a foreign language requirement and spanish is one of the options. |

Nobody can force you to learn anything. There is no requirement in the US that anyone learn English either. But of course, you would just be screwing yourself over. |

I'm in the UK. Most people here learn French as their second language - it has nothing to do with immigration. Why resent it? Spanish is a useful language to have, as French is. |

In a free country, no one can be forced to learn any language. |

No, but Ithink we need to get people to learn English. I care more of the attempt then the actual results though. Many of the European countries are heading that way. Germany announced that immigrants are forced to learn German, and England is now follow up forcing people to learn English. |

No one is saying you have to learn Spanish. The only situation where the case would be is if a school has a foreign language requirement and Spanish was the only language offered. In that case the parent and child could probably petition to have the child learn language through another means that would be the equivalent of the school's language requirement. |

No one HAS to do anything they don't want to. I was a teacher and no children are not forced to learn Spanish. It is the parents' choice. Spanish is not an elective taught in elementary years just in middle school and high school. Although some private schools do give the parents a choice of letting their kids learn their native language. |

Well, you don't HAVE to learn Spanish, but is wonderful for you, it expands your intellect and gives you the opportunity to communicate and learn from other cultures, I speak 3 languages and understand 3 more( not too fluent but i can carry a conversation) and I love it!!
Congratulations and always do what is best for you and don't pay attention to negative comments. |

I don't thank anyone can or should MAKE you learn anything.
However, I think the more knowledge you have in this world- about anything- the better off you are. And, I think that Spanish is incredibly useful. I am fluent in it, and, literally speak it everyday.... |

It's always your choice, even nowadays when there are so many Spanish-speaking people here in the USA, more than ever. If a person doesn't want to, they shouldn't have to, although more and more professions are including it in training. |

They way I see it is kind of like the ID chips.....you don't HAVE to get one but if you don't ...you won't have access to things. To me....then that is no longer a choice. It is the same deal with "must speak Spanish". Being bi-lingual isn't the issue because many people are already bi-lingual....they just don't speak Spanish. It is forcing it when you don't have a choice just so 1 particular group is catered to.
English is the official language of my state as well as over half of the rest of the states. English is a requirement for citizenship.
Citizens of this country shouldn't be forced to learn another language to be able to work and live in this country. Many people do have college requirements for a particular language for their speciality. Example....Latin for medicine.
We are having way too many people be displaced from jobs when they are older or are bi-lingual and just don't speak spanish in order to cater to just this specific group. Not to mention the added difficulty for other new immigrants being forced to learn 2 languages to function here. All just because 1 group refuses to speak English.
They will be passing out popsicles in hades before I speak Spanish. I didn't move to their country.....they came to mine. My ancestors had to learn it too, just like all the other immigrants who came here. It's obvious this excuse of bi-lingual education doesn't work because they aren't speaking English and not that many kids are fluent in Spanish either. All it's doing is holding our kids back. The experiment is a failure and it's time to stop this. Either learn English or leave. Any other language you CHOOSE to learn, should be your own choice. There's a ton more languages that are far more beneficial than Spanish to learn. |

No, I do not think anyone should "have" to learn Spanish unless they want to...BUT, if we do not, considering the changes taking place...can we get angry when we don't qualify for bi-lingual jobs or cannot communicate as needed with those around us? I am against illegal immigration but I think some of us are only hanging ourselves by being stubborn. Aside from that, what is it going to hurt to learn another language?
BTW: I'm like your mom with Spanish. I can speak it but not very well so I get embarassed when I have to. I've never been ridiculed, which I appreciate...I've had Spanish speakers be patient and helpful when I've tried most of the time. |

Subjects in school aren't necessarily a choice. I was required to take certain courses regardless of whether or not I would choose these courses on my own. |

Dog Tricks, what's the point ? Truly what is the harm in Mexicans learning English.? Compared to the grand bargain they receive here, asking them to understand English is not asking very much. The churches that cater to illegals could teach classes for free and ask for help from above for all to succeed. It's time the illegals stop commanding and demanding and try to make themselves better.Just because Dog Tricks likes Spanish why should the rest of us have to put up with it. |

It should be the persons choice!!!!! We live in the USA. WE SPEAK ENGLISH!!!!! Don't get me wrong I think it is good for people to speak other languages. But they SHOULD have to learn to speak english!! They should have to befor their kids go to our schools, because they don't speak english & it slows up OUR kids!!! & That IS NOT fair to our kids!!!!! |
