U.S. permenant residant returning to U.S. from India

U.S. permenant residant returning to U.S. from India. I am being told that i need to buy a return ticket if i leave to U.S. from India which costs more money instead of just buying a one way ticket and returning to NY. Also i have not been out of the U.S. for over a year. I hold an Indian passport. my age is 22 i would be extremely grateful if someone can demystify this for me because i may be taken advantage of for selfish political motives.
