I was born and raised in Italy, moved in the US when I was 18 for college. Meet my soon to be husband. He is in the US Army, and people keep telling me I cant marry him or live on base with him after we are married since im not a US citizen. Is that true?
Additional Details
Do I then have to give up my Italian citizenship. I am 27 and do have permanent resident status.

I don't know why they are telling you that but I don't believe it's true. You are most free to get married anytime you want. You are also most free to keep just your permanent residence and not apply for US citizenship if you don't want it. I don't know what requirements, if any, do they have for spouses to live on a foreign base but I'm almost sure you should be okay with just your green card if it's here in the US. A lot of foreigners without even permanent residence marry Army guys and are not even eligible for citizenship until they have their green card and have been married for 3 years, I don't hear them having problems.
P.S. Marrying a US citizen does NOT automatically transfer citizenship to yourself. Eligibility for citizenship would rely on the length of your permanent residence. |

Not true regarding to marry him or live with him as long as you have other type of legal status, such as F1 Student Status. Once you get married, he and you can file forms for you to have green card so that you live in US as Permanent Resident. He must be either US Citizen or US Permanent Resident to sponsor you though.

Your question is not an immigration issue. As a lawful permanent
resident it is unlikely you could not live on base with your husband.
He should inquire with the base housing office to be sure. |
